WEBVTT 1 00:00:07.640 --> 00:00:15.499 WLWV Board Room: Good evening. I am going to call this meeting to order for tonight's Wesley and Wilsonville 2 00:00:15.730 --> 00:00:19.959 WLWV Board Room: School Board meeting, and I'm going to turn it over for 3 00:00:20.210 --> 00:00:23.339 WLWV Board Room: to Mrs. Douglas for the roll call, please. 4 00:00:24.040 --> 00:00:26.419 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. Director, shoemaker. 5 00:00:26.770 --> 00:00:32.950 WLWV Board Room: director, sloop your chair, Taylor. Vice chair, Wyatt. 6 00:00:33.180 --> 00:00:36.329 WLWV Board Room: Here, Director Vidal here. Thank you. 7 00:00:38.100 --> 00:00:49.140 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. So we're gonna kick it off this evening with our high school representatives. And we have one individual who has been stuck in traffic. So 8 00:00:49.470 --> 00:00:57.210 we're gonna give her some time to get here. So we normally would start with Riverside High School. But instead, we're gonna move on to 9 00:00:57.370 --> 00:01:05.310 WLWV Board Room: Westland High School, and we will have Beatrice coming forward to speak with us. How are you? Good? 10 00:01:08.660 --> 00:01:35.950 WLWV Board Room: Hello! Everyone nice to see you again. My name is Beatrice Gilroy, and I'm the Asp president at Westland High School this year. Since I saw you all last in September. We've had a lot of fun events at Wesley. First off we had our club fair. So a great thing about having life classes. Asb is able to host a lot of our events during this time, and not have to take away from the traditional academic learning time. So we had our life. We had our class 11 00:01:35.950 --> 00:02:00.720 fair in the main gym during life class. In the middle of September we had around 60 clubs in attendance, so lots of different options for students at Wesley, and each club really made it their own, as you can see on the screen. They brought candy lots of different decorations. Our robotics team even brought their robot and had it shooting baskets the entire time. So it was really great, for our students see it that one on one time with that club 12 00:02:00.900 --> 00:02:25.689 WLWV Board Room: leadership and join some clubs while they're at it. And then the second event we had was our ninth grade scavenger hunt. So a big goal for asp this year is we're trying to have an event that's specific to each grade level. We sometimes find that we're leaving out certain grades with a lot of senior oriented events, or a lot of school wide events, but they don't always get that one on one time with their their friends in their grade. So ninth graders could 13 00:02:25.690 --> 00:02:47.290 WLWV Board Room: come before our wear white football game, and they could come either as individuals or as a team, and we had them race all around campus. Our winning team is featured on the slide. They got Dutch rose gift cards, and they were very happy about that and then we also had pizza and soda at the end. So it's a great chance for ninth graders to spend that time with each other. 14 00:02:47.540 --> 00:03:12.500 WLWV Board Room: And then, as always, spirit at Wesleyan is very high, especially this year. We're continuing with our spirit competition. So this is really a goal with trying to unify the school as a whole. We're all working towards those 20,000 spirit points for surprise event at the end of the year, and then also maintaining that competition aspect throughout the different grade levels so few ways students can earn points is by dressing up on students 15 00:03:12.500 --> 00:03:26.229 Fridays. You'll see. That was from our white themed day around mid-september. Our staff goes all out for these spirit dress up days, I want to say, around 95% of our staff consistently dress up 16 00:03:26.230 --> 00:03:54.390 WLWV Board Room: for these spirit days. They're earning those spirit points. And then another big goal has been trying to get students to go to games beyond just football. So we're trying to get students at volleyball soccer, cross country things like that. So they can also earn spirit points by going to those games. We do have some of our students sections featured on the slide as well, and then for our wear white game. We handed out rally towels. That was very popular. And we're gonna reuse those at other games as well. 17 00:03:54.460 --> 00:04:16.540 And then just 2 other updates about year long things that we have going on at Westland High School. Our live roar broadcasts is very popular. We have that weekly again in life class. So not taking away from that academic time. That's been a good change this year and we share all things. Westland High School from club events, sports. And then just general announcements on this broadcast 18 00:04:16.540 --> 00:04:39.050 we're able to feature guests, either. By video that they send in or live as you can see, we had 2 guests from our journalism department sharing about how to order your yearbooks. So that's very nice. That's where a lot of students get all their information at Westland High School. And then, lastly, the store. Our student store sales have been way up this year, which is great. We're selling food. 19 00:04:39.050 --> 00:04:48.110 WLWV Board Room: Celsius. Energy drinks have been very popular. Students love to get that at lunch, and our new merchandise is really helping with those sales as well. 20 00:04:48.110 --> 00:05:13.360 WLWV Board Room: And then, in the month of October, our upcoming event. That's really been our main focus is homecoming. Our kick off was today. And we've been having all sorts of events like spirit days students got to dress in their pajamas today. So that was fun. And then we'll have our Assembly homecoming court football game a unity event on Friday, and then our dance on Saturday. So at the November School Board meeting, I'll be sure to share how homecoming went. 21 00:05:13.370 --> 00:05:17.330 WLWV Board Room: So thank you all for your time, and I look forward to seeing you next month. 22 00:05:24.590 --> 00:05:36.999 WLWV Board Room: Thank you for that. And my daughter was one of the kids up there in the white. She's a freshman. and then I have one who's a senior. And now this makes all the sense why they're going to so many games. I didn't. I thought they were just motivated. 23 00:05:37.070 --> 00:05:42.669 WLWV Board Room: It's because they get that spirit reward. So this makes sense. Now, thank you for for putting me up on the T 24 00:05:42.910 --> 00:05:53.199 WLWV Board Room: Next, we're gonna bring up Beatrice. Oh, excuse me, we just have Beatrice. We're gonna bring up Trenton Bonfilio from Wilsonville High School. Thank you. 25 00:06:01.780 --> 00:06:02.470 WLWV Board Room: Okay. 26 00:06:03.190 --> 00:06:25.809 WLWV Board Room: Greeting school boards. Members. It is a pleasure to speak to you again. My name is Trenton Bonfilia, one of the Asp presidents here at Wilsonville High School. Last meeting I was able to highlight some of the massive strides we were making to improve campus quality and student experience, and I'm pleased to say that even though it has only been one month since I last saw you guys. We have even more positive improvements to share to the board. 27 00:06:25.890 --> 00:06:52.990 WLWV Board Room: To begin with, we had our first Pep Assembly. This assembly was unique compared to assemblies we've had in the past, because this assembly was entirely scripted, planned, and ran by asb officers and leadership volunteers. The results spoke for themselves, and according to teachers this has been the best assembly we have had in years. The mass student participation was incredible. We are already planning to replicate this process for our homecoming assembly, which is taking place in just over 2 weeks 28 00:06:53.180 --> 00:07:05.360 WLWV Board Room: on the subject of homecoming. The construction of homecoming floats is already underway. The outlines for parade floats have already been written by Asb, and we are overseeing the process of assembling these floats. 29 00:07:05.440 --> 00:07:25.020 WLWV Board Room: each one of the classes has their theme, and they've been hard at work for the past week. Smaller individual pieces will be fully assembled as we move closer towards the homecoming game, and we are excited to see the final results. Homecoming game. The homecoming parade is October thirteenth, and will be departing from the Wilsonville parking lot at 50'clock, and we hope to see everybody there. 30 00:07:25.830 --> 00:07:26.710 WLWV Board Room: Let's see here. 31 00:07:27.020 --> 00:07:49.039 WLWV Board Room: We are also proud to share that we are hosting the girls. Gen. Robotics event, this weekend girls, Gen. Is a one day opportunity for students whose gender is underrepresented in stem to gain experience in a wide range of competition goals. This event is hosted by our error code, 0 robotics team, all are invited to stop by and watch the competition this Saturday. 32 00:07:49.470 --> 00:07:59.479 WLWV Board Room: and when it comes to new things that have been implemented. Our weekly news broadcast is getting a massive upgrade. We have recently cleared out and reassembled our recording studio. 33 00:07:59.640 --> 00:08:10.510 WLWV Board Room: That we have not been using. The new studio is complete with a green screen lighting Wilsonville color, desk quality microphones, teleprompter, and 4 K. Camera. 34 00:08:10.730 --> 00:08:24.569 WLWV Board Room: Our weekly announcements are about to receive a monumental improvement in quality compared to the iphone videos we were recording previously given that our videos have already been a hit having a near-professional level studio will take things to the next level. 35 00:08:24.650 --> 00:08:35.490 WLWV Board Room: Our first video featuring the new space and equipment will be airing this week. During our life. 100 class. You can find our new broadcasts on the Wilsonville Broadcast Network Youtube page and website. 36 00:08:35.750 --> 00:08:44.400 WLWV Board Room: the Wilsonville community. And I have an undying commitment to making our school a better place. I'm excited to return with even more good news, and I thank you for your time. 37 00:08:51.610 --> 00:08:59.630 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. and I believe our next representative is just coming in. 38 00:09:01.070 --> 00:09:04.539 WLWV Board Room: I know. Take you could take your time. 39 00:09:04.860 --> 00:09:22.740 WLWV Board Room: So from Riverside High School we have laurel venegas, and take your time. You can gather yourself. So no pressure. Yeah, I just came from practice. I had to do an impromptu change in the car. So thank you to the superintendent and the board for having me 40 00:09:23.120 --> 00:09:33.859 WLWV Board Room: Riverside throughout the last month, has had a couple very successful school-wide events. In mid-september we had curriculum night, which was very well attended and great for the parents to meet with the high school staff. 41 00:09:33.920 --> 00:09:51.600 WLWV Board Room: We also had a student Run club fair last week, or maybe the week before that or so many of the clubs established were done by students like the DND club, the Snowboarding Club, the Gsa. Club, and some of our other clubs, like the National Honor Society, and speech and debate, as well as hosts. 42 00:09:51.740 --> 00:09:59.610 WLWV Board Room: business and marketing will be starting up a club as well. and teachers have been a great support to help start these clubs. So a big thank you to them. 43 00:09:59.850 --> 00:10:20.649 WLWV Board Room: Theatre preper theatre auditions have also happened, for Riverside's first ever show the Twelfth Night an adoption by William Shakespeare. The cast list was released, and the students are looking forward to their roles. We also have students ready to step in with tech rehearsals began this week, and the Twelfth Night is set to show on December seventh and Eighth, and this is Riverside's first chance to raise money for the drama department 44 00:10:20.920 --> 00:10:32.890 WLWV Board Room: for Athletics dance team has started their practices. Wrestling and Baskwell have had their open gyms with a great turnout. We've got a lot of engagement for winter sports, and I think more so than the fall sports. 45 00:10:33.640 --> 00:10:52.059 WLWV Board Room: Last month I was elected as President for Hosa, and that is the health occupation students of America. Hosa is an international student organization, recognized for the Us. Department of education and a Health Science Education Division of Act E. That's being run by Mister Whelan. So big. Thank you. To him 46 00:10:52.060 --> 00:11:06.800 WLWV Board Room: a Hosta promotes healthcare opportunities in the healthcare industry, and the goal is to enhance healthcare for all people. In the month of October, Riverside's Host a club is focusing on breast cancer awareness, and we plan to take action by wearing pink on national breast cancer awareness day next Friday, on October thirteenth. 47 00:11:06.830 --> 00:11:16.709 WLWV Board Room: We will also be passing out breast cancer awareness pins to wear for the duration of October. We partnered with leadership to make an announcement, and the morning announcements, as well as put flyers out around the school. 48 00:11:17.370 --> 00:11:43.369 WLWV Board Room: So good start for Hosa. Leadership has also been doing some of their own work planning spirit Week and Riverside's first ever school Dance spirit week will be October sixteenth. Through the twentieth, with Spirit day themes voted on by the students. The school dance will be on October nineteenth themed the fall festival, and we have a school assembly on the seventeenth. Leadership has done a great job planning and arranging our school, related events. So a big thank you to leadership, and their teacher, Mister Mitchell. 49 00:11:43.860 --> 00:11:44.950 WLWV Board Room: A 50 00:11:45.170 --> 00:12:02.910 WLWV Board Room: Oh, and our Cte program have also made advancements. Health occupations is bringing in several guest speakers throughout the next month to teach students about what life in the health field is like. Construction is partnering with parts and Rec to get materials like plants and wood, to build bird houses to place around the school campus. We're very excited to see where our cte programs go 51 00:12:03.680 --> 00:12:18.920 WLWV Board Room: overall. The students have been the base of riverside. And there is so much student led action, whether they are just participating in clubs and the international baccalaureate career and tech programs, or even just in class. So on the behalf of my classmates, thank you to the staff at Riverside you are very appreciated. 52 00:12:19.300 --> 00:12:40.230 WLWV Board Room: And then more on Ib. And CTE. Last week Riverside had an introduction to our international baccalaureate Ib program. The goal of Ib is to focus on active, compassionate, and lifelong learners who understand that people and their differences can also be right. Riverside staff will start highlighting Ib's goals and nominating student per month who's nominated for a characteristic. They embody 53 00:12:40.570 --> 00:12:56.650 WLWV Board Room: coming up on October eleventh, on the riverside campus, from 6 to 7 Pm. We have a dedication ceremony for the community to see Riverside high school renovations, the library, the classroom, gyms, etc., are all finished, and we are celebrating its completion. We hope to see you all there, that's all, and thank you for your time. 54 00:13:04.400 --> 00:13:19.160 WLWV Board Room: This is usually the moment that we allow our student representatives of their high schools the opportunity to get back to their normal lives and and not have to sit around and listen to us adults. And we want to say, Thank you guys for all coming out. And 55 00:13:19.380 --> 00:13:24.469 WLWV Board Room: one of the things we get to see real time what our students are faced with when they're athletes 56 00:13:24.900 --> 00:13:34.550 WLWV Board Room: like like laurel when they're in leadership, and they're juggling all these different things and having to prepare for a School School Board meeting. And I think that 57 00:13:34.690 --> 00:13:52.900 WLWV Board Room: it's interesting because I was a student athlete in college, and I remember just trying to barely get to something, so I wasn't late, so I made me think about myself running through that door late. So anyway, I it that was fun to see so I will give you guys an opportunity to exit if you like. You're more than welcome to stay, of course. 58 00:13:52.980 --> 00:13:56.660 WLWV Board Room: but I'll give you a few minutes, and thank you for having the courage to stand and 59 00:13:56.720 --> 00:13:58.010 and talk in front of us. 60 00:14:14.800 --> 00:14:18.819 WLWV Board Room: Alright. Well, that will take us into 61 00:14:19.160 --> 00:14:29.929 WLWV Board Room: recognitions. and we're going to start off with recognition of our capital construction bond program and, Dr. Ludwood, I'm going to pass it over to you. 62 00:14:30.970 --> 00:14:32.970 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. We have 63 00:14:33.000 --> 00:14:45.000 WLWV Board Room: 2 very important recognitions this evening. I get the opportunity to talk about the first one before I pass it off to our board colleagues to talk about the second one. 64 00:14:45.220 --> 00:15:02.030 WLWV Board Room: This is Remo Douglas, who most of you are very familiar with at this time, and we thought it was important that even though the bond is not fully complete, there are still projects that we pause and celebrate 65 00:15:02.620 --> 00:15:15.949 WLWV Board Room: just the momentous work that went into some significant openings. This fall in the district that are connected to the Bond and Remo is our bond project manager, bond program manager. 66 00:15:16.010 --> 00:15:28.029 WLWV Board Room: He's been with the district about 14 years, now came in as a project manager with several projects, soon became senior project manager. 67 00:15:28.130 --> 00:15:35.209 WLWV Board Room: and a few years ago promoted to our capital construction program manager or bond program manager. 68 00:15:35.780 --> 00:15:41.389 WLWV Board Room: Remo has a Bachelors of Science from Oregon State University 69 00:15:41.460 --> 00:15:45.799 WLWV Board Room: in construction engineering management. He's also a licensed Ccm. 70 00:15:45.910 --> 00:16:05.919 WLWV Board Room: Which means a certified construction manager. So a person with an enormous amount of skill, experience, and is leading overseeing one of our largest capital bonds in the history of this district at 206.8 million dollars, with 7 major projects. 71 00:16:06.110 --> 00:16:17.869 WLWV Board Room: Few of them that are completed, others that are in that Punch list kind of category that you'll hear about, and and then a few still underway. 72 00:16:18.510 --> 00:16:32.549 WLWV Board Room: One of the things I appreciate about Remo among many things is his ability to lead in both a macro sense as well as a micro sense. So you can get the big picture very easily. 73 00:16:32.560 --> 00:16:51.100 WLWV Board Room: Around what it means to oversee and put a timeline together for a series of projects, working with city planners, working with codes, working with hundreds and hundreds of staff and subcontractors, and he can pause in the middle of all that 74 00:16:51.580 --> 00:17:05.010 WLWV Board Room: and meet someone at their dining room table to talk about what kind of tree they'd like to see outside their window because of a project that we have going on, and our commitment to be good neighbors in this community. 75 00:17:05.220 --> 00:17:09.090 WLWV Board Room: and they'll take the time for those individual connections. 76 00:17:09.099 --> 00:17:12.770 WLWV Board Room: Every detail is important to our community 77 00:17:13.079 --> 00:17:16.020 WLWV Board Room: as well as be able to scan back and just 78 00:17:16.040 --> 00:17:20.030 WLWV Board Room: hold the enormity of what all those projects mean. 79 00:17:20.329 --> 00:17:27.460 WLWV Board Room: So we are incredibly appreciative that various project managers and our contractors were able to get 80 00:17:27.530 --> 00:17:33.509 WLWV Board Room: Athy Creek Middle School open. Finish up Wilsonville High School's auditorium 81 00:17:33.850 --> 00:17:38.830 WLWV Board Room: we've just heard from Riverside. They were able to open their doors, and 82 00:17:38.900 --> 00:17:48.290 WLWV Board Room: in this time, when we know there's labor shortages. there are construction delays happening everywhere material delivery delays 83 00:17:48.820 --> 00:17:58.780 WLWV Board Room: other districts that we know we're putting some things off, and the fact that we could keep on schedule and open 84 00:17:59.050 --> 00:18:06.360 WLWV Board Room: Athy Creek Middle School's new location and Riverside High school is a true Testament to 85 00:18:06.540 --> 00:18:11.940 WLWV Board Room: our contractors, who took on these these projects and their commitment. 86 00:18:11.960 --> 00:18:17.199 WLWV Board Room: but also to Remo, and the integrity in which he works, and those connections 87 00:18:17.230 --> 00:18:20.989 WLWV Board Room: and working 24, 7 constantly. 88 00:18:21.660 --> 00:18:35.960 WLWV Board Room: So we're here to appreciate and recognize your leadership. Primo and I know that behind you, you would say. are dozens of people that you rely on every day in their work. So we're gonna allow you to bring your team up 89 00:18:36.130 --> 00:18:37.739 WLWV Board Room: and to speak about 90 00:18:37.840 --> 00:18:47.999 WLWV Board Room: each of them, and collectively your team? So that we can recognize their great work. Thank you, Kathy, for the kind words and the opportunity to speak about the bond team. 91 00:18:48.370 --> 00:18:52.620 We're down at the operation center in the little tin building between 92 00:18:52.930 --> 00:19:12.840 WLWV Board Room: what's now Riverside and Stafford, quietly working way down there. There's a whole lot happening. Would ask the team members that are here. If you wouldn't mind standing. I'm just gonna say a few words about each of them. And recognize their work. It's it's unfair for me to accept any accolades associated with this work without speaking to what they do. 93 00:19:13.100 --> 00:19:17.810 WLWV Board Room: How about you guys? What can you line up right next to remote? Come all the way up so we can. Sure. Yeah. 94 00:19:18.030 --> 00:19:19.099 here we go 95 00:19:19.620 --> 00:19:26.479 WLWV Board Room: first. He's unable to be here today, but I always like to make sure to reference our Coo, Pat Mcguff, my boss 96 00:19:26.570 --> 00:19:37.350 WLWV Board Room: and a tremendous steady, guiding presence for our department as a whole and a tremendous mentor and partners. We've worked through this program over the last few years. 97 00:19:37.810 --> 00:19:57.279 WLWV Board Room: We have Amy Berger here our capital bond program coordinator. She has also been here with the district for the last 14 years, developing a deep knowledge of the district's design, philosophy and construction management strategies. She's become key to numerous aspects, program leadership, including design, procurement and communications. 98 00:19:57.780 --> 00:20:01.789 WLWV Board Room: Angela Caffrey, beside me is our senior project manager. 99 00:20:01.930 --> 00:20:13.329 WLWV Board Room: She is a seasoned veteran in the construction management field. In education she's led the design and construction of our largest project, the new Athe Creek Middle School, which, as we noted, opened successfully. 100 00:20:14.080 --> 00:20:25.939 WLWV Board Room: She also, at the same time along the way, managed a very complex project in the Westland High School Stadium improvements which we're all benefiting from for the last couple of years. Now. 101 00:20:26.330 --> 00:20:31.369 WLWV Board Room: Ellen Leventhal second from the right. There 102 00:20:31.440 --> 00:20:41.690 WLWV Board Room: ellen, is our bond accountant. She quickly came into our department with her in-depth accounting skills, dove right into learning and understanding construction management. 103 00:20:41.820 --> 00:21:04.210 WLWV Board Room: Her tireless efforts ensure the prompt and accurate payment of all of our vendors every week, and it is exceedingly quick, which is something we pride ourselves on, and something that quietly the industry really appreciates about working for us. She also makes sure that our financial audits and reconciliations are smooth and efficient for everyone involved. 104 00:21:04.330 --> 00:21:10.779 WLWV Board Room: Our auditors really like us, we give them everything they need really quickly and nothing. They don't want to see 105 00:21:12.130 --> 00:21:31.669 WLWV Board Room: Brian Hendrix on the end. There is a senior project manager. He's with Turner Townsend, but works in our office. Bryan's management of the stunning Wilsonville High School auditorium has provided countless benefits. He has a background in theatre as a student, a teacher, a lighting control technician and a project manager. 106 00:21:31.870 --> 00:21:36.410 WLWV Board Room: He also managed early work on what is now Riverside High School for the program. 107 00:21:37.510 --> 00:21:49.540 WLWV Board Room: Nick Reiner in a white shirt there Nick began with the project with the district a couple of years ago, managing a number of small projects for us and providing project management support on some of the big projects. 108 00:21:49.800 --> 00:22:01.060 WLWV Board Room: Nick has proven to be a very quick study with a rapidly growing tool set. Most recently Nick was assigned the project management of the construction phase of our new primary school in Wilsonville. 109 00:22:01.430 --> 00:22:15.889 WLWV Board Room: Not here. But Brooke Bashan was a project manager that worked with our team from Turner and Townsend. She completed the Frog Pond design process and then moved on to work with another firm. But wanna make sure we recognize the excellent work that she did 110 00:22:16.400 --> 00:22:38.159 WLWV Board Room: and then finally, Adam Neal was a project manager here for the last 3 years, he said. I could share that. He's currently relocating out of town to support some family medical needs but he worked with us over the last 3 years to do a ton of our safety and security upgrades amongst other projects, and most recently completing the last phase of work for Riverside High School. 111 00:22:38.200 --> 00:22:54.789 WLWV Board Room: And then I think she's hiding towards the back. But Kelly Wheeler, with Turner Townsend is a supervisor with that firm does excellent work supporting us in the program. That's a firm that we work with has a lot of different capabilities, and every once in a while we call up, say, Hey, Kelly. 112 00:22:54.830 --> 00:23:01.419 WLWV Board Room: we've got this problem. What resources can you all bring to bear, and she helps. Make sure that those things happen for us. So 113 00:23:01.570 --> 00:23:03.349 WLWV Board Room: again, I'm just 114 00:23:03.430 --> 00:23:13.519 WLWV Board Room: very, very proud and appreciative of everyone on this team. Everyone here has given very long days over a period of the last few years to make sure these projects happen for kids. 115 00:23:13.610 --> 00:23:36.019 WLWV Board Room: There's been a lot of celebration in the last couple of months, as things are wrapping up on some big projects, getting students in seeing staff excited about their spaces, really making them their own. And we're looking forward to continuing the last couple of summers of summer work finishing up the primary school. So again, really appreciate the board. Taking the time to recognize the work that we do. 116 00:23:36.080 --> 00:23:45.309 WLWV Board Room: It's very appreciated. And it's a good rare chance for these folks to to get a little public recognition for what we do behind the scenes. 117 00:23:45.680 --> 00:23:46.530 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. 118 00:23:55.150 --> 00:24:04.640 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. Remo, for that. Would any of you like to speak for have any kind words to add. Alright. 119 00:24:05.130 --> 00:24:21.799 WLWV Board Room: vice chair. I've had the pleasure of being the board liaison to the long range planning committee for the last 2 years, and my term just ended. I'm excited that Dan's taking that on but in that time I had a chance to see this team. Really. 120 00:24:21.950 --> 00:24:37.330 WLWV Board Room: see them in action. Getting updates on the projects, hearing more about the delays and the staffing issues and the challenges that go into spending down 206 million dollars, and 121 00:24:37.440 --> 00:24:55.040 WLWV Board Room: it's not lost on us that one of the biggest items that we're entrusted with as a district is when we have a capital bond, and when we have the opportunity to do things like build new schools, open new schools, upgrade our already amazing schools. 122 00:24:55.240 --> 00:25:05.780 WLWV Board Room: and your team came in and made that happen. And then along the way, you know, kept the Bond oversight committee updated on what was happening. 123 00:25:06.050 --> 00:25:34.160 WLWV Board Room: And that level of trust and and sharing is really really important to the ways that our community trusts us. And so just wanna thank you all for your hard work on that. Also know that anytime there's a great big project in neighborhood. There are impacts, and you're the, you know the first people that people are calling when the construction noise is too loud or something isn't as they planned. 124 00:25:34.160 --> 00:25:53.080 WLWV Board Room: and that takes a level of grace and respect that I know that you all have brought to these projects. And then I also just wanna call out the little things. I know, Amy, that you were so pivotal in picking out things like furniture in our new buildings. It's gonna have a lasting impact on these spaces. 125 00:25:53.100 --> 00:26:10.590 WLWV Board Room: you know, for for decades. And so wanna just thank those small touches that you all put into things as well. It really matters. It makes a big difference. And it really allows our community to trust us that when we have these funds we're gonna spend them and in responsible ways. So thank you. 126 00:26:13.180 --> 00:26:14.790 WLWV Board Room: Anyone else. 127 00:26:15.840 --> 00:26:29.780 WLWV Board Room: I just wanted a comment that our communities have high standards for these projects. And and they support these projects right and and and historically, we've we've had great support. 128 00:26:30.410 --> 00:26:44.449 WLWV Board Room: our parents want great facilities for our students, but but our neighbors, even those who don't have students, they also have high standards, and I appreciate the graceful way that you've navigated all of that, because there's there's always 129 00:26:44.590 --> 00:26:46.480 WLWV Board Room: there's always that. So thank you. 130 00:26:49.990 --> 00:27:11.939 WLWV Board Room: director of it all. I just wanted to congratulate you all on these really large projects that you've completed, and thank you so much for the thoughtfulness you've put into these buildings, because where our students learn is really important. And we know that that learning environment just makes it so much 131 00:27:11.940 --> 00:27:25.749 WLWV Board Room: better for them. And we can see that in the differences amongst school districts, and so I just wanted to say, we are so lucky to be here in the West Lynn Wilsonville School district, and have you all working with us. So thank you. 132 00:27:27.240 --> 00:27:47.730 WLWV Board Room: You have a look on your face, Mike. I was just gonna say I know. Laurel mentioned it a little quickly, but a great way to also celebrate is to participate in the dedication ceremonies which are open to the public. So the first one is for riverside, October eleventh at 6 pm. So everyone's welcome to come. 133 00:27:47.730 --> 00:28:10.990 WLWV Board Room: and we will. We are in the process of planning the dedication of Wilsonville. High school auditorium, as well as the new Athe Creek Middle School and then also the remodel for the human center. So those will all be open to the public, and we'll make sure we get those announcements out, and a great way for our community to celebrate and and get a tour of each of those facilities. So 134 00:28:11.990 --> 00:28:18.819 WLWV Board Room: thank you. Thank you. And I will just say, Thank you for all your hard work, and as a 135 00:28:18.830 --> 00:28:27.949 WLWV Board Room: a prize for your hard work the the district and the board has left you a half inch to your waistline through that bunt cake 136 00:28:28.010 --> 00:28:34.840 WLWV Board Room: and and that cookie. So you guys enjoy that. And that's my gift to you. 137 00:28:34.870 --> 00:28:36.940 WLWV Board Room: Thank you guys so much. 138 00:28:38.540 --> 00:28:39.290 WLWV Board Room: Bye. 139 00:28:45.450 --> 00:28:56.309 WLWV Board Room: we have one more recognition that is going to focus on dyslexia. And I'm going to turn this topic over to 140 00:28:56.740 --> 00:29:02.609 WLWV Board Room: director sloop to Spearhead and depth. Director Vidal will also play a role in this 141 00:29:02.790 --> 00:29:05.699 recognition. So we're going to start with directus loop. 142 00:29:07.140 --> 00:29:08.310 WLWV Board Room: Alright. 143 00:29:12.020 --> 00:29:17.739 WLWV Board Room: So yes, the board is having dyslexia, awareness, month recognition. 144 00:29:18.320 --> 00:29:21.210 WLWV Board Room: And can we change the next slide? 145 00:29:22.110 --> 00:29:34.540 WLWV Board Room: Westland? Wilsonville School district is committed to providing an equitable and inclusive learning environment for all students, which includes identifying and removing learning obstacles for every student's success. 146 00:29:35.460 --> 00:29:37.980 WLWV Board Room: So we ask, what is dyslexia? 147 00:29:38.630 --> 00:29:51.519 WLWV Board Room: Dyslexia is an unexpected difficulty in reading for an individual who has the intelligence to be a much better reader. It is commonly due to difficulty in phonological processing. 148 00:29:52.170 --> 00:30:01.990 WLWV Board Room: which is the appreciation of the individual sounds of spoken language, which affects the ability of an individual to speak. read, spell. 149 00:30:02.030 --> 00:30:04.819 WLWV Board Room: and often learn a second language. 150 00:30:08.860 --> 00:30:14.060 WLWV Board Room: Dyslexia is a learning disability that impacts the heart of literacy. 151 00:30:14.250 --> 00:30:35.189 WLWV Board Room: which is a foundation for learning. 20% of the population has some degree of learning disability, and out of these people, 80% have dyslexia. Approximately, 80% of people with learning disabilities have dyslexia which makes it the most common learning disability 152 00:30:35.380 --> 00:30:47.560 WLWV Board Room: depending on the definition you choose. The prevalence of reading disability is approximately 5 to 20% of all school-age children in the United States. 153 00:30:47.750 --> 00:30:59.590 WLWV Board Room: Reading disabilities seem to affect males slightly more than females, although schools identify boys with them twice as often as girls. 154 00:30:59.830 --> 00:31:22.060 WLWV Board Room: Both environmental and genetic influences affect the expression of dyslexia and dyslexia has been identified as having a strong genetic basis. Approximately 40% of siblings, children or parents of an affected person will have dyslexia. 155 00:31:30.890 --> 00:31:35.319 WLWV Board Room: So again, October is recognized as dyslexia awareness month. 156 00:31:36.490 --> 00:31:55.590 WLWV Board Room: We raise dyslexia awareness by sharing early signs of the learning, disability to help families and teachers identify early dyslexia in students identifying dyslexia early may assist families and educators in getting literacy support as soon as possible. 157 00:31:55.830 --> 00:32:03.760 WLWV Board Room: and dyslexia is also called a reading. Disability. Being able to read is the foundation for successful education. 158 00:32:07.470 --> 00:32:11.400 WLWV Board Room: Thank you both for that. And 159 00:32:18.280 --> 00:32:24.469 WLWV Board Room: and I'll open it up for comments by other board members that may want to speak on the topic. 160 00:32:24.810 --> 00:32:28.369 WLWV Board Room: If there's anything that you'd like to say, please let me know. 161 00:32:30.110 --> 00:32:37.259 WLWV Board Room: I just wanted Curtis, could we? Could we leave the last slide up. Just so it it stays up while folks are are talking. 162 00:32:37.450 --> 00:32:39.440 WLWV Board Room: The one that says October is the 163 00:32:42.210 --> 00:32:43.159 WLWV Board Room: thank you. 164 00:32:44.860 --> 00:32:46.589 WLWV Board Room: Yeah, thank you. 165 00:32:47.190 --> 00:32:48.030 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. 166 00:32:50.010 --> 00:33:00.019 WLWV Board Room: And now we'll move into the board reports and we'll start. I was just saying to leave it up while folks were. If if people want to talk. 167 00:33:03.110 --> 00:33:06.440 WLWV Board Room: I just want to make a quick comment. 168 00:33:07.680 --> 00:33:15.110 WLWV Board Room: how much we appreciate our community's input and and how you help our awareness 169 00:33:15.390 --> 00:33:31.329 WLWV Board Room: every time we get emails. I I don't know what you think happens when we get an email. But if we all get an email, we can't start talking to each other, because then we violate public meeting laws. but it causes us to do more research. Many of you have emailed us with questions 170 00:33:31.430 --> 00:33:48.659 WLWV Board Room: and included documents for us to look at. It's so helpful when you, when you do some of that work, and then that just encourages us to to get more information. Sometimes that information we're getting is coming from district personnel. Sometimes we're getting from other places, but it often. It's just very valuable what we get from you. So thank you for that 171 00:33:53.130 --> 00:34:08.850 WLWV Board Room: I think to that end. When we recognize different issues or different topics. And this concept of raising awareness? It can be very grassroots, and it can also be very coordinated through our schools. 172 00:34:08.850 --> 00:34:27.630 WLWV Board Room: And I was emailing earlier today that I would I had some friends over for dinner on Saturday night, and we started talking about dyslexia and screeners and schools and the assessments. And the interventions. And it wasn't a room full of people. 173 00:34:27.650 --> 00:34:48.590 WLWV Board Room: It was a small group. But even those conversations that you helped prompt us to be able to have and have effectively makes a difference, because there are families. That we get to speak with where this word starts to spread. And it's because of that grassroots effort and that grassroots work. And so it really is meaningful. 174 00:34:48.590 --> 00:35:18.179 WLWV Board Room: And I'll speak about this a little bit in my board report as well. But we hope that that grassroots effort continues, and that this parental involvement that we're seeing continues as we look at things like our literacy curriculum renewal. So just want to mention that. And just as a reminder that, you know you don't have to pack a room full of people in red shirts, although it is delightful. But it really is that communication that that means a lot. So just want to say, Thank you. 175 00:35:21.060 --> 00:35:22.120 WLWV Board Room: Anyone else. 176 00:35:24.220 --> 00:35:31.230 WLWV Board Room: Yeah. Usual. Okay. yes. So I wanted to thank the community as well for your 177 00:35:32.170 --> 00:35:39.490 WLWV Board Room: emails. Meeting with members of the Board and just your engagement. And you've always been very 178 00:35:39.670 --> 00:35:45.399 WLWV Board Room: polite, professional, and always gave a lot of information 179 00:35:45.480 --> 00:35:49.539 WLWV Board Room: that was a very informative. And if you know me. 180 00:35:49.620 --> 00:35:55.479 WLWV Board Room: I like to research. I like the information, and I so appreciate all of you that are here tonight, so thank you 181 00:35:59.200 --> 00:36:04.749 WLWV Board Room: nothing. I'll save my comments from my board reports. So if there's 182 00:36:05.930 --> 00:36:06.720 WLWV Board Room: Dr. Levi. 183 00:36:08.700 --> 00:36:23.470 WLWV Board Room: thank you. Ii want to recognize and thank our board for moving this to a recognition so we could have this special time. And then not to put people on the spot. But maybe that's okay. 184 00:36:23.590 --> 00:36:29.959 WLWV Board Room: Sarah, could you stand Sarah Lawrence? And then I don't know if Julie Frazier is here and Kara Clark. 185 00:36:30.460 --> 00:36:52.130 WLWV Board Room: She's where. Oh, okay, great. Yeah. And I just want to recognize these 3 individual parents who brought this topic the most steadfastly. I would say to not only myself and our staff but would come on a monthly basis to 186 00:36:52.400 --> 00:37:04.210 WLWV Board Room: not just in form, but also in a real spirit of partnership and and collaboration around any advocacy, for a group is good advocacy for all. 187 00:37:04.240 --> 00:37:32.820 WLWV Board Room: and the spirit in which always the information was delivered and shared was generative. I think someone mentioned respectful, but was such a spirit of care and compassion, not only for their own children, but for all the children in our district. So I wanna thank you, Sarah. I know that you've got a lot that you coordinated. And hopefully, it's out on our community board. And if you are more interested in some of the things they've planned for this month. You can always 188 00:37:33.100 --> 00:37:50.080 WLWV Board Room: contact any one of these individual individuals who have taken this advocacy not only on a scale that we see tonight, but also in meeting with our staff. I know a few of you have also met with staff meetings and talked about your family experience, which is so powerful. 189 00:37:50.310 --> 00:37:59.779 WLWV Board Room: So thank you for your advocacy. Thank you for making us better. And thank you for all that you're doing for the families in this community so greatly appreciate it. 190 00:38:14.030 --> 00:38:22.060 WLWV Board Room: Alright, I'm gonna try this again. We'll move into 191 00:38:22.210 --> 00:38:26.319 WLWV Board Room: our board reports and we'll start with director shoemaker. 192 00:38:27.280 --> 00:38:35.370 WLWV Board Room: I'm just gonna apologize for not being as red as some people. I just. I'm just hinting at Red tonight. And I'm going to donate my time. 193 00:38:38.480 --> 00:38:39.920 WLWV Board Room: Director sloop. 194 00:38:51.810 --> 00:38:53.500 WLWV Board Room: Okay? So 195 00:38:53.840 --> 00:39:05.949 WLWV Board Room: if you may have noticed last month, I kinda changed my board reports to kind of highlight awareness month. And so this month is dyslexia, awareness, month and down syndrome awareness month. 196 00:39:06.540 --> 00:39:13.220 WLWV Board Room: and our district is an inclusive district, and that may mean something different to each of you. 197 00:39:13.650 --> 00:39:20.480 WLWV Board Room: But my message is that all? So all students are valued, and each student has unique gifts to celebrate 198 00:39:21.760 --> 00:39:24.370 WLWV Board Room: as a parent. I marveled at 199 00:39:24.430 --> 00:39:29.070 WLWV Board Room: our kids, milestones of development. The first smile which you know, we were told. 200 00:39:29.320 --> 00:39:30.979 WLWV Board Room: make sure it's not gas 201 00:39:31.190 --> 00:39:42.899 WLWV Board Room: rolling over, walking their first word, tying shoes, etc. Each of our kids developed at their own pace, and each had their own strengths, which we celebrated. 202 00:39:43.150 --> 00:39:46.400 WLWV Board Room: and we encouraged their efforts on the challenges. 203 00:39:47.090 --> 00:39:56.520 WLWV Board Room: I also learned very early on how to be an advocate for one of our kids who have sensory processing issues as well as other challenges along with it. 204 00:39:57.330 --> 00:40:00.879 WLWV Board Room: He was wired differently, and he learned differently. 205 00:40:02.250 --> 00:40:13.149 WLWV Board Room: and he definitely had his own gifts. When he was in preschool there was a classroom project where they got to make something out of marshmallows and mini, marshmallows and toothpicks. 206 00:40:13.420 --> 00:40:25.430 WLWV Board Room: and when I went into the classroom everybody's looked like a little porcupine. and then I looked at our sons. and it was a 3 dimensional skyscraper that he had made out of 207 00:40:25.860 --> 00:40:33.870 WLWV Board Room: these mini marshmallows and toothpicks by creating triangles that were upside down and right side up, and it was amazing. 208 00:40:34.640 --> 00:40:47.150 WLWV Board Room: And I did not want him to get mislabeled. and nor did I want him to lose his confidence. I was his advocate, and he, until he could self advocate, advocate for himself 209 00:40:47.610 --> 00:41:00.210 WLWV Board Room: every day was a challenge. as many of you parent warriors can relate to. I was trying to raise awareness 25 years ago about something not many talked about. 210 00:41:00.900 --> 00:41:06.570 WLWV Board Room: nor many really wanted to understand, including some of our own family members 211 00:41:07.480 --> 00:41:11.480 WLWV Board Room: raising awareness can change the stigma of disabilities. 212 00:41:12.210 --> 00:41:19.440 WLWV Board Room: Dyslexia is not related to intellectual ability. Albert Einstein had dyslexia 213 00:41:19.980 --> 00:41:25.069 WLWV Board Room: strengths are they have great imagination, critical thinking skills. 214 00:41:25.230 --> 00:41:30.580 WLWV Board Room: They're good at problem solving. And they have a high level of understanding of what they're being read. 215 00:41:30.700 --> 00:41:35.900 WLWV Board Room: 2 early intervention in diagnosis is critical 216 00:41:36.140 --> 00:41:42.099 WLWV Board Room: without awareness. Those with dyslexia lose hope because they don't know 217 00:41:42.190 --> 00:41:46.740 WLWV Board Room: what is different about them. These students become frustrated. 218 00:41:47.520 --> 00:41:56.909 WLWV Board Room: The national center of learning disability. Cited people with learning disabilities are 2 to 5 times more likely to report mental health problems than those without. 219 00:41:57.040 --> 00:42:04.809 WLWV Board Room: In fact, 40% of those students with learning disabilities suffer from feelings of sadness and depression 220 00:42:05.600 --> 00:42:10.889 WLWV Board Room: I can vouch for that. Our our son was constantly bullied. 221 00:42:11.380 --> 00:42:14.570 WLWV Board Room: Ridiculed name called 222 00:42:14.820 --> 00:42:20.220 WLWV Board Room: his mental health spiraled, and it was a challenge to try and bring him up 223 00:42:20.390 --> 00:42:29.210 WLWV Board Room: and re and remain encouraging to give him his self-confidence. because his mental health was always in jeopardy. 224 00:42:30.430 --> 00:42:40.509 WLWV Board Room: A student with dyslexia may be impacted socially and emotionally, and some may develop noticeable behaviors. Avoidance, disruption. 225 00:42:40.650 --> 00:42:42.970 WLWV Board Room: or the saying, bad attention is 226 00:42:43.010 --> 00:42:46.509 WLWV Board Room: better than no attention, which was typical of our son. 227 00:42:49.090 --> 00:42:54.450 WLWV Board Room: and they will sometimes they will learn to isolate. That was another trade of our son. 228 00:42:55.250 --> 00:42:58.710 WLWV Board Room: But I'm happy to say, as a proud Mom moment. 229 00:42:58.900 --> 00:43:01.059 WLWV Board Room: Our son is at Dartmouth 230 00:43:01.150 --> 00:43:12.369 WLWV Board Room: obtaining a Ph. D. As a medical physicist because he wants to calibrate and operate the X-ray radiation machine radiation machines to treat 231 00:43:12.480 --> 00:43:16.200 WLWV Board Room: certain types of cancer like thyroid cancer, breast cancer. 232 00:43:23.530 --> 00:43:34.150 WLWV Board Room: Literacy is the foundation for learning. The Us. Department of Education said, 85% of kids in juvenile court systems are functionally illiterate. 233 00:43:36.020 --> 00:43:39.590 WLWV Board Room: Also. October is down syndrome, awareness month. 234 00:43:39.680 --> 00:43:42.750 WLWV Board Room: 450,000 individuals 235 00:43:43.410 --> 00:43:49.130 WLWV Board Room: have down syndrome, and that is where they have 3 of the number 21 chromosomes. 236 00:43:49.630 --> 00:43:56.339 WLWV Board Room: although many have hypotonia and cognitive delays. some can go on to have 237 00:43:56.390 --> 00:44:02.160 WLWV Board Room: some type of independence, and we can celebrate those achievements and their abilities. 238 00:44:02.510 --> 00:44:06.050 WLWV Board Room: Their learning style is usually multisensory 239 00:44:06.190 --> 00:44:09.440 WLWV Board Room: with repetition and clear instructions. 240 00:44:10.650 --> 00:44:13.429 WLWV Board Room: They can understand more than they can express. 241 00:44:14.380 --> 00:44:25.689 WLWV Board Room: In August the district watched the documentary Forget me not! Which followed the Bernier family, who wanted their son Emilio to be integrated into this New New York school system. 242 00:44:26.090 --> 00:44:36.530 WLWV Board Room: The parents were amazing advocates, and they knew that Emilio was capable of more than what was observed during the long assessments in an unfamiliar environment. 243 00:44:36.980 --> 00:44:41.910 WLWV Board Room: Emiliel's parents knew he would learn from observing his peers. 244 00:44:42.020 --> 00:44:47.290 WLWV Board Room: The Berniers celebrated Emilio's differences. They saw them as gifts. 245 00:44:47.860 --> 00:44:50.240 WLWV Board Room: The Berniers visited our school 246 00:44:50.450 --> 00:44:58.019 WLWV Board Room: our district before school started at late. In late August. Emilio was happy, and his smile was contagious. 247 00:44:58.320 --> 00:45:02.950 WLWV Board Room: He even took a bow in front of the entire audience of the district. 248 00:45:03.340 --> 00:45:06.450 WLWV Board Room: I saw. Emilio is a happy second grader 249 00:45:07.290 --> 00:45:15.639 WLWV Board Room: raising awareness is key to providing parents, family, community, and teachers some tools to use, to assess 250 00:45:15.870 --> 00:45:29.380 WLWV Board Room: it's our responsibility as a district to provide training and materials in a learning environment which removes the barriers and obstacles which will then allow for our students educational success 251 00:45:30.060 --> 00:45:32.510 WLWV Board Room: and with 252 00:45:32.690 --> 00:45:37.289 WLWV Board Room: dyslexia awareness month. There's several wonderful events going on 253 00:45:37.630 --> 00:45:40.820 WLWV Board Room: wear red on Mondays. 254 00:45:41.100 --> 00:45:46.220 WLWV Board Room: the Wilsonville Library at the end of the month is going to 255 00:45:46.610 --> 00:45:48.180 WLWV Board Room: are you going to be talking about that 256 00:45:48.490 --> 00:45:49.379 to talk about? 257 00:45:49.730 --> 00:45:55.140 WLWV Board Room: It's gonna be airing the right to read and anyway. 258 00:45:55.290 --> 00:46:02.670 WLWV Board Room: So there's a lot of fun activities Sarah, can you help me with? The certain dates I forgot my little piece of paper because I was running and late. 259 00:46:02.940 --> 00:46:04.989 WLWV Board Room: so I'd like to share those with. 260 00:46:06.570 --> 00:46:07.580 WLWV Board Room: the parents. 261 00:46:12.860 --> 00:46:15.509 WLWV Board Room: So we're attending. That was my sixth grade. 262 00:46:17.540 --> 00:46:20.140 WLWV Board Room: And then there's bullwink, girls. 263 00:46:21.370 --> 00:46:22.180 WLWV Board Room: So 264 00:46:23.520 --> 00:46:30.219 WLWV Board Room: there's an advance of this Quality Library, October seventeenth Literacy night, and then 265 00:46:30.370 --> 00:46:32.749 WLWV Board Room: October 20 sixth is the right. 266 00:46:35.550 --> 00:46:36.300 WLWV Board Room: Alright. 267 00:46:39.130 --> 00:46:42.020 WLWV Board Room: thank you. Director Vidal. 268 00:46:43.420 --> 00:46:46.090 WLWV Board Room: I sent some slides. 269 00:46:49.740 --> 00:46:53.489 WLWV Board Room: hey? Alrighty! Next slide, please. 270 00:46:53.580 --> 00:47:00.839 So I heard this quote last week in it. Well, I it's from 1,962, so 271 00:47:01.040 --> 00:47:15.190 WLWV Board Room: I'm a little late but it it really made me think of all of you here in the room today, and parents at home. We do these things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard. 272 00:47:15.240 --> 00:47:17.990 And so I appreciate all of you. 273 00:47:18.080 --> 00:47:27.470 WLWV Board Room: We are fighting the good fight. and we are standing up for our children, and that's what we're here for today. So 274 00:47:29.140 --> 00:47:39.379 WLWV Board Room: to those, to my, to my Wilsonville community, for those of you that didn't hear the right to read will be at our Wilsonville Public Library on October 20 sixth. 275 00:47:39.490 --> 00:47:56.759 So that will. It is a a fantastic movie that really opens your eyes. So next slide. I just had a few things to share, and then I wanted to celebrate next. It's national Hispanic heritage month, and my son. 276 00:47:56.760 --> 00:48:15.819 WLWV Board Room: Is in the dual language pro program at Lowry primary. And I have said this, and I will say it. Again and again we moved from Portland to Wilsonville specifically to, you know, get in the lottery to get him in the dual language program, and we were successful in that. And because of that, my son has had a Hispanic 277 00:48:15.900 --> 00:48:34.389 WLWV Board Room: teacher every year. From K through 5, and that's so important, and half of his class are native Spanish speakers, and what this means for him is, he has developed friendships since he was 5 years old, of kiddos. From 278 00:48:34.770 --> 00:48:59.400 WLWV Board Room: across cultures. And it's just amazing. And it's it's so different than than my experience. When I was little in Oregon City next slide, please. This month we've had the awesome opportunity to visit schools on their curriculum nights, and I just wanna give a huge shout out to Riverside High School, gorgeous, gorgeous high school, but more importantly, so 279 00:48:59.400 --> 00:49:19.080 super important education going on at this high school with their international baccalaureate program that we've already heard from tonight and near to and dear to my heart is their health care program, and they also have a business and marketing program, and Dr. Ludwig and I were 280 00:49:19.080 --> 00:49:43.629 WLWV Board Room: privileged enough to be in the room when mr. Mitchell was explaining the marketing program, and they had all these budgeting games. And I thought, Wow, if I had those budgeting games at age 15, maybe I'd be a lot better off than I am. So moral the story. The sooner you learn about money and marketing the better. Next slide, please. 281 00:49:44.340 --> 00:50:08.850 WLWV Board Room: Next I was able to go to the Beckman Creek fun run, and for those of you that don't know in Wilsonville this Beckman Creek fun Run is like famous. They do an incredible job, and this year I was lucky enough to attend, and it was awesome, and it was at the Wilsonville High School track, and they raised so much money for their students and programs. It was really inspirational, and next slide. 282 00:50:08.910 --> 00:50:32.409 WLWV Board Room: And then, lastly, I was able to attend both the curriculum night at Lowry and Beckmann Creek, which which was great. So it was a very busy month. Thank you. To all of our teachers and families and students for the hard work you're embarking on, and we'll all see you very soon at parent-teacher conferences. So that's it 283 00:50:35.970 --> 00:50:37.140 WLWV Board Room: to you. 284 00:50:38.320 --> 00:50:40.020 WLWV Board Room: vice Chair Wyatt. 285 00:50:41.910 --> 00:50:43.789 WLWV Board Room: So I think 286 00:50:44.080 --> 00:51:05.519 WLWV Board Room: one thing that is just lovely about the timing of dyslexia awareness month, and all of these efforts is it's not October isn't gonna happen in an end. We have some real call to action moments that are ahead of us. And so what I'd like to share is just a reminder that 287 00:51:05.520 --> 00:51:10.200 WLWV Board Room: as we look at our literacy curriculum renewal, there is. 288 00:51:10.200 --> 00:51:26.120 WLWV Board Room: there will be opportunities for everyone to get involved and to think more and to offer feedback in addition to our incredible staff, who are currently in the process right now, we have participants from every every school participating in that 289 00:51:26.120 --> 00:51:49.510 WLWV Board Room: but there will be an opportunity for parents and families to get involved, and that'll be meaningful, because it will shape the curriculum and the assessments and the experience that our students have as they're learning to read. And as we are thinking about the best ways to serve our students, and so how exciting to not just have this awareness, but then, actually the chance to do something to play that active role 290 00:51:49.650 --> 00:52:18.849 WLWV Board Room: and the other really exciting way that we can take action is on November seventh we have our local option levy on the ballot, and this is a special pot of funding that local communities can opt in to tax themselves to pay for additional opportunities in a school district. So here our local option levy amounts a dollar 50 per $1,000 of assessed value 291 00:52:19.170 --> 00:52:30.380 WLWV Board Room: which in Oregon's crazy property tax system, basically means the assessed value of your home. So for the average home in our communities, it's about $700 a year. 292 00:52:30.470 --> 00:52:35.930 WLWV Board Room: but that money pays for 90 positions in our school district. 293 00:52:36.010 --> 00:52:54.899 WLWV Board Room: 90 teachers and staff who are playing an essential role in being those teachers to our students who are learning to read and learning to love, to read. And so, as we think about this month, and what we're recognizing, I hope that you'll join with all of us. 294 00:52:55.070 --> 00:53:14.680 WLWV Board Room: Who are unanimously supporting this local option, Levy, and as soon as your ballot comes in the mail like, rip it open, make a big show production of it. Fill out that. Yes, vote because it's really going to be what keeps our school district exceptional. It's gonna keep our class sizes where they are right now. 295 00:53:14.680 --> 00:53:40.909 WLWV Board Room: Gonna keep our graduation rate high. And that is when we vote. Yes, on that renewal. So get ready. I think that let's get mail middle of October. And it really is the most actionable way that we can continue to invest in the education of our students. So thank you for raising awareness, and then thank you for your continued involvement and support both on curriculum renewal and our local option levy 296 00:53:45.360 --> 00:53:46.050 WLWV Board Room: you 297 00:53:46.730 --> 00:53:50.489 WLWV Board Room: I'll use my time. I won't use it all. 298 00:53:50.500 --> 00:53:52.880 WLWV Board Room: So you guys don't have to listen to me. 299 00:53:52.920 --> 00:54:03.349 WLWV Board Room: But I just wanna thank all of you in the room for all the education that you've given me around dyslexia. II had no idea. 300 00:54:03.480 --> 00:54:09.809 WLWV Board Room: I knew it existed. I never had anyone in my family or any of my friends that would admit 301 00:54:09.880 --> 00:54:12.969 WLWV Board Room: that they had dyslexia, and so 302 00:54:14.450 --> 00:54:26.010 WLWV Board Room: I think that through this process and being a board member your input as a community I don't see it as complaining. I don't see. Is it as 303 00:54:26.090 --> 00:54:30.130 WLWV Board Room: you against us. I see it as an opportunity to learn. 304 00:54:30.250 --> 00:54:53.609 WLWV Board Room: and I tell people all the time I'll sit with anyone, but I won't stand next to just anyone. And so I sit with a lot of people in our community that people call radical or call them a lot of different things, and I don't see them that way. What it is for me is an opportunity to learn, and even though we may have differences, and we may agree to disagree, I can get a different perspective as to why someone may think the way that they think. 305 00:54:53.620 --> 00:55:06.649 WLWV Board Room: And I think back to to myself as a child, the things that I was going through that nobody knew about. I think about my neighbor Sarah seeing her cart her kid every day from West Lynn to Jesuit or Edison 306 00:55:06.700 --> 00:55:12.440 WLWV Board Room: and making that drive. And I remember when she started that drive years ago, I said, Man, she's crazy. 307 00:55:12.660 --> 00:55:33.189 WLWV Board Room: I said. There's no way in the world I'm getting up every morning and driving on 2 17 right? But I didn't know. You know I was like once, you just, you know, leave Jake in our school. I was like II didn't get it. And so and it's through the education that you have all given me, that it gave me some perspective. When I hear your realities and hundreds of thousands of dollars that you've spent 308 00:55:33.540 --> 00:55:38.979 WLWV Board Room: to take care of your kiddos. It it hits different 309 00:55:38.990 --> 00:55:58.409 WLWV Board Room: right? And here I am my neighbor who we share property line, and I'm watching her lived reality every day, and I'm sitting there like man. She's crazy. I don't know why she's driving way over there we got. And now that I've been educated, now I understand. And so I wanna thank you all for helping me understand, because I just didn't know. 310 00:55:58.430 --> 00:56:10.590 WLWV Board Room: And it wasn't my reality, just like people didn't understand and know my own reality. So that's all I have to say about it and you know the work doesn't stop here this evening. There's a lot left to do. 311 00:56:10.690 --> 00:56:20.469 WLWV Board Room: I feel like we're just at the beginning of this, Marathon, but I know that all of you will be there to stride it out with us. So thank you, and that's all that I have to share for this evening. 312 00:56:25.950 --> 00:56:28.560 WLWV Board Room: I will turn it over to Dr. Ludwig 313 00:56:34.860 --> 00:56:35.850 WLWV Board Room: and 314 00:56:39.570 --> 00:56:45.580 WLWV Board Room: thank you. And as several of you have mentioned, there's there's a number of important 315 00:56:45.900 --> 00:56:49.150 WLWV Board Room: awareness events this month. 316 00:56:49.300 --> 00:56:56.309 WLWV Board Room: and I want to thank particularly director, Sloop and Director Vidal for the beautiful recognition, the thoroughness 317 00:56:56.540 --> 00:57:18.730 WLWV Board Room: having all those facts and figures. We've certainly heard from some of our parents the information, but to have it tonight in October was really meaningful. So thank you. So when we think about elevating the strengths of our students who don't want to be identified in just one way, but for who they are and all that they bring to the world and to each other. 318 00:57:19.080 --> 00:57:25.310 WLWV Board Room: as has been mentioned already, to night. It is dyslexia awareness month for families who 319 00:57:25.340 --> 00:57:52.690 WLWV Board Room: couldn't be here or maybe haven't been able to email us, but do have children with Adhd diagnoses. We wanna also recognize what that reality is for those families, for the advocacy that they take on with their children's teachers and with all of us around better understanding whether they have a 504 plan or they're working to navigate organizational skills and classrooms. 320 00:57:52.700 --> 00:58:00.460 WLWV Board Room: and so want to let those families know tonight that we also see you. And we hear your stories. 321 00:58:00.830 --> 00:58:16.500 WLWV Board Room: It's also blindness, awareness month. We do have families in our district students with visual impairments and challenges, and it's always an opportunity for us to continue to get better at our work and those accommodations and access for them. 322 00:58:16.510 --> 00:58:30.260 WLWV Board Room: Again. Those families may not be here tonight, or may be at home, but we want to let them know that we see you, and we recognize that if there's ways that we can continue to support you better, that we're committed to that. 323 00:58:30.600 --> 00:58:34.799 WLWV Board Room: And then also, as director sloop mentioned. It's down syndrome awareness month. 324 00:58:35.320 --> 00:58:45.549 WLWV Board Room: And there's picture of Emilio, who visited us this year with his parents as we watched their film. And we do have students with down syndrome in our district, and 325 00:58:45.570 --> 00:59:09.699 WLWV Board Room: proud to say, with our inclusive schooling model, that they are in their general education classrooms alongside their neighborhood peers and not in separate special classrooms, and that's a commitment of our staff. Whether any of those families are here tonight or not. We want them to know that we are. See you, we hear you, and whatever we could do to continue to get better 326 00:59:09.760 --> 00:59:13.549 WLWV Board Room: at access and opportunity, we're committed to that as well. 327 00:59:13.730 --> 00:59:22.799 WLWV Board Room: I couldn't just pick one color to wear tonight, because I part of my role is to represent all of our families. So I hope that 328 00:59:22.930 --> 00:59:32.030 WLWV Board Room: Our families know with this slide and all the ribbons that the various ribbons they represent, that committed to all the students in our district. 329 00:59:32.080 --> 00:59:53.469 WLWV Board Room: Whether their families could be here tonight or not, and II know from the spirit of the parents who have spoken to us often, that when they come for their own children. They also would say they stand alongside every family and their children. So whether you're wearing red tonight or not, I know that we celebrate. The awareness of all of these important 330 00:59:53.480 --> 00:59:55.250 WLWV Board Room: aspects of children 331 00:59:55.750 --> 01:00:07.640 WLWV Board Room: I do want to talk a little bit more about, because we've spent much of the evening talking about dyslexia awareness. I do want to spend a little bit of time highlighting down syndrome awareness. So next slide. 332 01:00:08.110 --> 01:00:09.330 WLWV Board Room: Chris. 333 01:00:09.890 --> 01:00:18.329 WLWV Board Room: and just show some pictures here. So this this is a highlight of some accomplished young adults. Who all happen to have down syndrome. 334 01:00:18.510 --> 01:00:27.629 WLWV Board Room: Up on the top left. There is Chris Nikki, who was the first young adult with down syndrome to complete an iron man. 335 01:00:28.030 --> 01:00:35.099 WLWV Board Room: To the right of him is Zhu Zhu, who is in China. The first Symphony conductor with down syndrome. 336 01:00:35.740 --> 01:00:38.700 WLWV Board Room: Next to him is 337 01:00:40.210 --> 01:00:48.230 WLWV Board Room: Let's see Madeline Stout. first supermodel with down syndrome below her 338 01:00:49.090 --> 01:00:57.259 WLWV Board Room: is Amy Bakerstadt first Nc. Double a competing athlete with down syndrome engulf. 339 01:00:58.710 --> 01:01:04.129 WLWV Board Room: To the left of her is Kayla Mckean, and I've seen her in several documentaries. 340 01:01:04.460 --> 01:01:09.580 WLWV Board Room: The first lobbyist on Capitol Hill. with down syndrome. 341 01:01:10.840 --> 01:01:18.349 WLWV Board Room: and then to the left of her is James Martin, the first to receive an Oscar with Down's syndrome. 342 01:01:19.350 --> 01:01:23.850 WLWV Board Room: and when we think about the recency of these firsts? Because it 343 01:01:23.880 --> 01:01:26.990 WLWV Board Room: they've not. They've not happened that long ago. 344 01:01:27.290 --> 01:01:31.880 WLWV Board Room: Sometimes we can ask ourselves, why has it taken so long. 345 01:01:32.480 --> 01:01:39.699 WLWV Board Room: For individuals with down syndrome to make these types of accomplishments. And it's not that the DNA 346 01:01:39.760 --> 01:01:47.109 WLWV Board Room: has changed as director sloop. Read the statistics. It's about access and opportunity. 347 01:01:47.590 --> 01:01:54.960 WLWV Board Room: And so the more that our schools have opened up and our society has opened up for access and opportunity. 348 01:01:54.990 --> 01:02:03.089 WLWV Board Room: the more every person gets to showcase their strengths and who they are. I was thinking about your son with the marshmallows. 349 01:02:03.140 --> 01:02:08.930 WLWV Board Room: I'm surprised he's not an architect, but anyway but maybe those were genomes he was creating, too. 350 01:02:09.190 --> 01:02:20.769 WLWV Board Room: so I think you know, that's that's what it means to be in a fully inclusive school district. And the shirt I wore tonight is about choosing to include 351 01:02:20.980 --> 01:02:26.990 WLWV Board Room: that all of our children deserve that opportunity, that access an opportunity so that they don't have to wait. 352 01:02:27.250 --> 01:02:29.429 WLWV Board Room: and that the opportunity is there. 353 01:02:31.450 --> 01:02:42.860 WLWV Board Room: And I think about what the next slide. when Hilde de Bernier said. I know Emilio can do everything he just needs to be given the opportunity. 354 01:02:42.920 --> 01:02:47.300 WLWV Board Room: And that's what we heard tonight. That's what we've heard from our parents 355 01:02:47.320 --> 01:02:55.780 WLWV Board Room: about making sure our kids have the opportunity. And then the next slide just talks about this evolution of inclusion. 356 01:02:56.680 --> 01:03:07.099 WLWV Board Room: and I think we can recognize whether these these are dots. But they symbolize people. and we can think about times in the history of our nation, of our world 357 01:03:07.310 --> 01:03:13.899 WLWV Board Room: when exclusion was the norm. And you can think of any, maybe marginalized group that might have felt 358 01:03:14.430 --> 01:03:16.180 WLWV Board Room: on the outside. 359 01:03:16.350 --> 01:03:23.350 WLWV Board Room: or any student feeling like they're not like others, and how that feels to to feel excluded. 360 01:03:23.810 --> 01:03:26.770 WLWV Board Room: And then the movement around 361 01:03:27.290 --> 01:03:36.790 WLWV Board Room: taking groups and putting them in a special class or giving them an opportunity, but at not being with the others. And it wasn't that long ago that we did have segregated 362 01:03:36.880 --> 01:03:39.419 WLWV Board Room: classes here in our district. 363 01:03:39.780 --> 01:03:49.059 WLWV Board Room: And as we move towards more full inclusion, the idea of integrating students bringing them back into the general education classroom with their peers. 364 01:03:49.730 --> 01:03:51.759 WLWV Board Room: But it's not full inclusion if 365 01:03:51.780 --> 01:03:57.200 WLWV Board Room: they're still just sitting at a back table, or they're not with everyone else. 366 01:03:57.960 --> 01:04:01.310 WLWV Board Room: And then that fourth circle shows the idea of 367 01:04:02.030 --> 01:04:04.480 WLWV Board Room: inclusion. Everyone's together. 368 01:04:05.010 --> 01:04:11.500 WLWV Board Room: But where the evolution really moves is first questioning, why are those dots 369 01:04:11.620 --> 01:04:12.750 WLWV Board Room: green? 370 01:04:13.200 --> 01:04:24.109 WLWV Board Room: I mean? Is there a normal? Is there really that kind of homogeneity, or is everyone really diverse in their own ways, too, and not trying to always decide who 371 01:04:24.160 --> 01:04:26.579 WLWV Board Room: who is the in and who is the other? 372 01:04:26.750 --> 01:04:33.959 WLWV Board Room: Because even those first 4 circles really have a problematic element to them in that there's some kind of a 373 01:04:34.090 --> 01:04:37.250 WLWV Board Room: defining of Who's the other. 374 01:04:37.760 --> 01:04:43.410 WLWV Board Room: And so I think, as our society works, moves more towards really understanding diversity. 375 01:04:43.490 --> 01:04:57.409 WLWV Board Room: And our schools reflect more diversity in our classrooms and our teaching staff. And as we recognize that everyone comes with those elements, whether they're racial ethnicity, gender, identity. 376 01:04:57.890 --> 01:05:00.050 WLWV Board Room: culture, religion 377 01:05:00.160 --> 01:05:05.859 WLWV Board Room: with who we are, and we need to recognize and celebrate those and teach to diversity. 378 01:05:09.940 --> 01:05:39.220 WLWV Board Room: So, moving into my report, we've already heard about curriculum nights, and I want to thank the Board members for all those that you were able to attend. We do recognize that on one night I think we had 7 elementary schools all on the same night. So you had to kind of pick one of those to go to and thank you for scrambling around so you can see some pictures up there of just some beautiful evenings. Some of the schools also did kind of a community fair, where families could learn about more programs in the schools as well as hear their teachers speak. 379 01:05:39.870 --> 01:06:00.770 WLWV Board Room: we have a monthly leadership Forum, where we commit, as we're about 80 leaders in the district, whether they're principals, assistant principals, instructional coordinators, directors, executives, those that lead all different departments across the district from operations to school based. We commit to coming together once a month. 380 01:06:00.770 --> 01:06:12.340 WLWV Board Room: doing some leadership, learning together. And this last month we opened up our Equity Action Plan and reviewed that and committed to that work again. 381 01:06:12.870 --> 01:06:27.560 WLWV Board Room: Last week I was able to attend the Cosa Oregon Equity Summit. which is about statewide folks coming together, hearing speakers, but also committing to our equity work in our various school districts, and those are just some pictures of some of the 382 01:06:27.920 --> 01:06:30.890 WLWV Board Room: highlighted speakers from the event. 383 01:06:32.540 --> 01:06:34.900 WLWV Board Room: and in the oops other way. 384 01:06:35.430 --> 01:06:38.440 WLWV Board Room: While we're Nope. There we go. 385 01:06:38.550 --> 01:06:49.400 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. While we're while I'm talking about the topic of equity, just want to share again with the board that, as you know we had some recent legislation 386 01:06:49.480 --> 01:06:59.210 WLWV Board Room: that was that passed in Oregon, that mandates for every school district to have an educational equity advisory committee. 387 01:06:59.580 --> 01:07:02.089 WLWV Board Room: Now our district, fortunately, is 388 01:07:02.290 --> 01:07:22.220 WLWV Board Room: been working on this for a while. We have school committees, equity committees. We have a district Equity committee. We have a parent advisory on racial Equity Committee. So we've been in the work for a while. Some districts, maybe haven't yet, or we're in the process. But this legislation now gets everybody moving more in that direction. 389 01:07:22.220 --> 01:07:33.160 WLWV Board Room: and ensures that these committees have also a representation on them that includes parents and students as well as employees and community members. 390 01:07:33.860 --> 01:07:47.019 WLWV Board Room: The law states that if your school district, with 10,000 students or more, the committee had to be in place by this fall. 10,000 students or less, which is where we are. We have until 2025. 391 01:07:47.090 --> 01:07:53.239 WLWV Board Room: But we're going to go ahead and transition actually into this committee this school year. 392 01:07:53.460 --> 01:07:59.170 WLWV Board Room: I think we're primed for it. We're ready for the work. It feels like to not do it now is just 393 01:07:59.320 --> 01:08:01.340 WLWV Board Room: waiting for an arbitrary date. 394 01:08:01.600 --> 01:08:16.409 WLWV Board Room: and I think there's an opportunity by moving now that we can get our students more involved, because that was one of the questions we were looking at, anyway. And so we can go ahead and move with that process. So here's a little bit of a draft timeline. 395 01:08:16.930 --> 01:08:18.190 WLWV Board Room: the next slide 396 01:08:22.510 --> 01:08:45.819 WLWV Board Room: of first of all just informing about this legislation, so we were able to do some of that work in our last leadership, Forum. Informing the board, I gave you some of that information last year already and have been updating you. We will then need to update the various equity teams so that they're not waiting for something to start. But they know we're moving in that direction. 397 01:08:46.120 --> 01:08:52.719 WLWV Board Room: Sakra is the acronym for the superintendent's Advisory Committee on Racial Equity. That's the parent group. 398 01:08:53.010 --> 01:09:08.379 WLWV Board Room: And then, once all those groups know and we've been able to inform. Then it's about informing the community and seeking out the volunteers who would like to serve on that committee, giving them some information and their opportunity to volunteer 399 01:09:08.740 --> 01:09:26.170 WLWV Board Room: to fill out a form. This is one where you actually make the final decision. So this is an interesting committee. The superintendent brings the finalists to the board, and then you approve that group. So that's a way for board members to be involved as well in the process. 400 01:09:26.270 --> 01:09:30.589 WLWV Board Room: Also, one of the members on the committee has to serve on the Budget Committee. 401 01:09:30.760 --> 01:09:43.179 WLWV Board Room: So when there's an opening. And we interestingly already have someone on the Budget Committee who's also part of the Parent Equity Committee. So in some ways you're already fulfilling that 402 01:09:43.380 --> 01:09:55.539 WLWV Board Room: As I said, we've been kind of moving in this work already, and so these won't be too big of lifts for us. The goal would be around February. To begin to then start meeting with that 403 01:09:55.590 --> 01:09:59.539 WLWV Board Room: committee for them to learn more about their roles and responsibilities. 404 01:09:59.660 --> 01:10:15.940 WLWV Board Room: So this is a draft. Anything can happen if we don't get enough volunteers. We've got to keep putting it out there, and it could be delayed somewhat, or if we get a lot of volunteers very quickly, and you'd like to see the slate earlier than January. We could always adjust that. But this is a draft. 405 01:10:18.130 --> 01:10:24.919 WLWV Board Room: and then, just in terms of, you know. So what changes and what's what's different with this and 406 01:10:25.380 --> 01:10:44.000 WLWV Board Room: So we already have an equity team at each school that would stay the same. They're kind of deep in some specific strategies and goals that they want to see happen at their school, whether it's curriculum based or student, belonging or their own learning. They want to be able to do that more specifically. 407 01:10:44.110 --> 01:10:54.919 WLWV Board Room: we have our student affinity groups and our staff affinity groups. Those will continue, we'll continue to have our annual community Equity Summit bringing in community partners. 408 01:10:55.090 --> 01:10:59.009 WLWV Board Room: But the part that might that will likely change down below 409 01:10:59.080 --> 01:11:00.660 WLWV Board Room: in order to avoid 410 01:11:00.710 --> 01:11:17.029 WLWV Board Room: redundancy is that the parent Equity Advisory Committee, and probably the district Equity team would go away, and in place of those would be this educational equity advisory committee, since school staff and parents are a part of that 411 01:11:17.630 --> 01:11:22.269 WLWV Board Room: and then they would, while both those other groups 412 01:11:22.300 --> 01:11:27.790 WLWV Board Room: also advised on the Equity Action plan. This is now the committee that would continue to do that. 413 01:11:27.810 --> 01:11:33.010 WLWV Board Room: and then, of course, have a representative on the Budget Committee. so a lot would stay the same 414 01:11:33.130 --> 01:11:36.389 WLWV Board Room: in terms of at the school level 415 01:11:36.550 --> 01:11:45.060 WLWV Board Room: and our summit, but in terms of the district-wide groups those would merge into this educational equity advisory committee. 416 01:11:48.400 --> 01:12:00.240 WLWV Board Room: and then, next in my report, I've committed to giving you a monthly update on our K 5 literacy renewal process. You can see where we are in the renewal process that slide 417 01:12:00.540 --> 01:12:04.960 WLWV Board Room: and next, this should now be familiar. Next slide. 418 01:12:06.130 --> 01:12:12.219 WLWV Board Room: We're over here now in October, through February, where the Literacy adoption team 419 01:12:12.390 --> 01:12:24.949 WLWV Board Room: is meeting, and they've got a series of meetings and processes that they're going to go through. And then, as a reminder from Director Wyatt, there are places in this process where parents also give input 420 01:12:25.000 --> 01:12:28.770 WLWV Board Room: and those will be made known to the community. 421 01:12:29.500 --> 01:12:30.260 Okay. 422 01:12:30.410 --> 01:12:42.179 WLWV Board Room: next slide. So this is just a reminder of the role responsibility of that adoption team. I'm not going to read all of that. You can see a long list that involves 423 01:12:42.570 --> 01:12:48.069 WLWV Board Room: a lot of their own learning around National Research. looking at our data. 424 01:12:48.460 --> 01:12:56.650 WLWV Board Room: using a lot of guidance from Oregon rubrics for curriculum renewal, the Oregon Department of Education's literacy framework as a guide. 425 01:12:57.370 --> 01:13:03.279 WLWV Board Room: and then, as they get into materials working with publishers. 426 01:13:03.520 --> 01:13:04.830 WLWV Board Room: approve lists 427 01:13:06.190 --> 01:13:13.660 WLWV Board Room: feedback from parents until they get to a place where they make that final recommendation 428 01:13:14.790 --> 01:13:15.900 WLWV Board Room: next slide. 429 01:13:19.130 --> 01:13:28.809 WLWV Board Room: and I think they have actually about 11 11 sessions that you're doing. So. There's quite a few. So we just had our first session in September. There'll be a couple more in October. 430 01:13:28.880 --> 01:13:55.800 WLWV Board Room: We have 63 licensed teachers and specialists on the team. So specialists means whether they work with language learners, El D teachers or special education teachers. We have reading coaches, teacher librarians. So these are folks that are involved with literacy, with students, but may not be a classroom teacher. That's why they're called a specialist. And then also classroom teachers. So it's a large group representing all 9 primary schools. 431 01:13:55.810 --> 01:14:02.170 WLWV Board Room: So, and the various grade levels. And I'm going to pass down 432 01:14:02.780 --> 01:14:06.929 a folder for each of you. This is a folder that the team 433 01:14:07.050 --> 01:14:13.750 WLWV Board Room: each of the participants got. So you can have your own folder and you'll see inside 434 01:14:13.830 --> 01:14:20.319 WLWV Board Room: the Oregon early literacy framework that each of the adoption team members got 435 01:14:20.350 --> 01:14:34.759 WLWV Board Room: a copy of the Powerpoint facilitating through the session that first session a couple of the research articles that they that they had, and the idea of that first session, as you can see, was around building background 436 01:14:35.440 --> 01:14:41.600 WLWV Board Room: and then doing some reading together. So the room was quiet at times. Sometimes when I just 437 01:14:41.970 --> 01:14:44.750 WLWV Board Room: opened the door and looked in. It was quiet. And 438 01:14:44.760 --> 01:14:50.999 WLWV Board Room: Dr. Soy said. They're all reading, and then working through and unpacking some of that research. 439 01:14:51.080 --> 01:14:52.570 WLWV Board Room: and 440 01:14:52.920 --> 01:15:14.609 WLWV Board Room: and then also making some decisions about how to get ready for the next session what some of the homework was, and always going back to their buildings to share out with the whole staff. So that's this reciprocal recursive process where they come, do some work, but then go back and share that thinking and work and get input also from their staff back in their buildings 441 01:15:15.540 --> 01:15:16.770 WLWV Board Room: next slide. 442 01:15:20.740 --> 01:15:30.400 WLWV Board Room: So in looking at some of that research, what emerged were these key qualities. Of what is it that we're looking for? In reading materials based on the research they were reading? 443 01:15:30.780 --> 01:15:34.960 WLWV Board Room: and again, this is some of the lists that came up. 444 01:15:35.110 --> 01:15:42.270 WLWV Board Room: making sure that word study phonics, epidemic awareness is a part of the daily reading curriculum. 445 01:15:42.740 --> 01:15:46.079 WLWV Board Room: that there are interventions for students who need 446 01:15:46.340 --> 01:15:48.560 WLWV Board Room: additional or varied instruction. 447 01:15:49.850 --> 01:15:54.490 WLWV Board Room: The text that we put in front of children is incredibly important, that they're high quality. 448 01:15:54.670 --> 01:15:59.779 WLWV Board Room: but that there's also a variety of texts, ones that are decodable ones, that 449 01:15:59.860 --> 01:16:05.699 WLWV Board Room: are at their just right, just fit, but also ones that also push them beyond that. 450 01:16:06.260 --> 01:16:12.559 WLWV Board Room: and that there's also attention to reading for meaning and gaining information as part of daily learning. 451 01:16:16.030 --> 01:16:32.979 WLWV Board Room: So, as I mentioned, there'll be a couple more sessions for them in October, and I'll be able to share in November some of the learning from October, and we'll do our best to keep giving you some of the items that they're working through, and you can keep your folder and 452 01:16:33.020 --> 01:16:37.609 WLWV Board Room: tuck those things in there, and you'll have those materials available to you as well. 453 01:16:37.800 --> 01:16:43.069 WLWV Board Room: And then I just think about the opportunities that you have with your school site visits. 454 01:16:43.320 --> 01:16:53.780 WLWV Board Room: and if you're assigned to some primary schools, getting some opportunities to peek in some classrooms and feel free to talk to the principals and teachers who 455 01:16:53.880 --> 01:16:58.189 WLWV Board Room: are leading those sessions, too, about literacy in their school and 456 01:16:58.270 --> 01:16:59.680 WLWV Board Room: what they're working on 457 01:17:01.670 --> 01:17:08.319 WLWV Board Room: next slide. Last couple things I just want to talk about is you know, as we get school 458 01:17:08.380 --> 01:17:30.629 WLWV Board Room: going, and it's underway and you've been hiring teachers in the consent agenda just wanted to share with a few of you who may not know. But we do have kind of a multi tiered district mentoring program, and so often when we hire people, they'll ask us what are some support systems in place? Because 459 01:17:30.660 --> 01:17:36.319 WLWV Board Room: the first 2 weeks of school there's a lot of excitement and newness. And then it starts to get 460 01:17:36.700 --> 01:18:05.149 WLWV Board Room: hard and you're in it every day, and you're starting to work. Look at the data and work with students, and it gets complex. And while there are many folks on the teachers team to support their own grade, level team or department, their instructional coordinator, they're administrators. Sometimes you just need folks who are specifically focused on our new teachers. So we have experienced mentors at the primary middle and high school level. 461 01:18:05.290 --> 01:18:09.730 WLWV Board Room: who work regularly with our teachers, who are in their first or second year of teaching. 462 01:18:10.090 --> 01:18:24.890 WLWV Board Room: So not if not if they're new necessarily to the district, but new to the teaching profession their first or second year. So they're assigned a mentor, and they meet with them regularly, and that doesn't mean that the other folks drop off. This is in addition to 463 01:18:25.820 --> 01:18:40.029 WLWV Board Room: we also, this year have a experienced administrator mentor for our first year administrators, and we have a number, a couple of new principals who you met and assistant principals. And so we have about 10 mentees 464 01:18:40.130 --> 01:18:56.550 WLWV Board Room: and an experienced administrator mentor who is meeting with them. It doesn't mean the supports that Dr. Soissin or Dr. Pryor, Dr. Spencer Eames give, you know, drops away. This is in addition to all the other ways that they're supported by their colleagues. 465 01:18:56.940 --> 01:19:09.119 WLWV Board Room: and then we do have a few folks in their second year as principals who just would like another year with a mentor. So we have a different person. In the queue lined up 466 01:19:09.210 --> 01:19:16.889 WLWV Board Room: to do that for a few of our administrators who are in their second year, which brings its own, you know, challenges to 467 01:19:18.270 --> 01:19:24.599 WLWV Board Room: while you're out and about in schools. If you want to ask questions about mentoring when you're in your site, visits as well. 468 01:19:24.740 --> 01:19:26.470 WLWV Board Room: and at the very end 469 01:19:27.940 --> 01:19:29.040 WLWV Board Room: last slide. 470 01:19:31.680 --> 01:19:35.879 WLWV Board Room: So the the state assessment results are out. 471 01:19:36.630 --> 01:19:51.320 WLWV Board Room: and you probably read some things in the media and the wonder sometimes is, what do we do with that data? Well, this type of data, that summative has its own set of purposes and limitations. 472 01:19:51.340 --> 01:19:53.830 WLWV Board Room: And what you'll 473 01:19:53.880 --> 01:20:11.949 WLWV Board Room: hear from statisticians and those who put these assessments together is that this kind of data really helps you take a look at your program or some longitudinal trends. And so all of the district and school-wide data for every district and school in Oregon is available on the ode website. 474 01:20:12.140 --> 01:20:15.390 WLWV Board Room: But we then distribute it to our staff. 475 01:20:15.440 --> 01:20:24.270 WLWV Board Room: and it's used by our principals and teachers. They get their own school. They have access to a little bit more of the discrete data. 476 01:20:24.340 --> 01:20:34.329 WLWV Board Room: and it goes to inform their school work plans. So when you're out in schools, you'll hear more about that school's data in the work plans, because that's the context that you'll be in. 477 01:20:34.490 --> 01:20:36.770 WLWV Board Room: and your principal will share with you 478 01:20:36.960 --> 01:20:43.960 WLWV Board Room: what was the data the year before last year's data? What they're noticing with it some of their strategies and their goals. 479 01:20:44.100 --> 01:20:46.320 WLWV Board Room: And then, of course, individual data. 480 01:20:46.380 --> 01:20:56.960 WLWV Board Room: Because it is confidential to that student, is sent home, you know, securely. So parents will get that data now that it's been officially released. 481 01:20:57.930 --> 01:21:07.990 WLWV Board Room: So again, as you get ready for your school site visits, there's an opportunity for a lot of things for you to look at and ask questions. And of course your principals will be able to tell you about 482 01:21:08.320 --> 01:21:13.449 WLWV Board Room: State assessment data along with our own district interim 483 01:21:13.620 --> 01:21:19.299 WLWV Board Room: assessment map. And if there's any other formative assessments that you're curious about, too. 484 01:21:20.800 --> 01:21:22.260 WLWV Board Room: and that 485 01:21:22.870 --> 01:21:25.840 WLWV Board Room: thank you for your patience. See end of my report. 486 01:21:30.010 --> 01:21:30.910 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. 487 01:21:39.950 --> 01:21:44.329 WLWV Board Room: We will now move into our 488 01:21:44.600 --> 01:21:50.209 WLWV Board Room: consent, agenda, but I'll give some of the folks a little bit of time there to get out, so that 489 01:21:50.770 --> 01:21:52.780 WLWV Board Room: they have time not to exit. 490 01:21:58.700 --> 01:22:01.430 WLWV Board Room: Not yet. I just wanted. I think. 491 01:22:04.670 --> 01:22:05.680 WLWV Board Room: but yes. 492 01:22:12.880 --> 01:22:23.999 WLWV Board Room: alright. Looks like we've cut the room down a little bit, and now we'll get into the consent, agenda! Do we have a motion 493 01:22:25.040 --> 01:22:29.239 WLWV Board Room: to approve the consent, agenda. 494 01:22:29.790 --> 01:22:34.329 WLWV Board Room: I move we approve the consent. Agenda. Thank you. We have a second. 495 01:22:34.430 --> 01:22:35.720 WLWV Board Room: I'll second 496 01:22:36.960 --> 01:22:39.049 Mrs. Douglas. Would you please call the vote 497 01:22:40.190 --> 01:22:41.710 WLWV Board Room: director shoemakers? 498 01:22:41.970 --> 01:22:51.899 WLWV Board Room: Yes, Director Sleuth, I chair Taylor. Aye, that's chair Wyatt. Director Vidal. Yes, thank you. 499 01:22:55.960 --> 01:22:57.240 A 500 01:22:58.600 --> 01:23:00.640 WLWV Board Room: everybody's favorite public comments. 501 01:23:03.120 --> 01:23:13.009 WLWV Board Room: The is there anyone in the room who may have missed the sign up sheet for public comment and wants to have their name added to it before I 502 01:23:13.960 --> 01:23:15.680 move on. No, okay. 503 01:23:16.480 --> 01:23:25.000 WLWV Board Room: can we just pop it. So Julie Fraser, who failed to arrive to be recognized because 504 01:23:25.220 --> 01:23:39.800 WLWV Board Room: because she was with she was at the city doing the same work. Yeah, thank you for that. You missed being called to stand back. Julie, did you? Wanna II saw you raising your hand, did you? Wanna 505 01:23:40.500 --> 01:23:45.219 WLWV Board Room: okay? Alright, I will add, we'll get you on there. 506 01:23:50.050 --> 01:23:53.699 WLWV Board Room: We embarrassed other people by having them stand. But you you weren't here. 507 01:23:56.510 --> 01:24:02.629 WLWV Board Room: and Julie, would you be so kind as to share what topic you'll be talking about. 508 01:24:03.290 --> 01:24:07.909 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. Just wanted to make sure I got it correct. 509 01:24:11.470 --> 01:24:14.500 WLWV Board Room: Okay, I will go through 510 01:24:15.020 --> 01:24:25.579 WLWV Board Room: The public speaking or public comments. Excuse me, etiquette. Most of you have been here, and I see a lot of familiar faces, and you're pretty familiar with the etiquette, so I won't 511 01:24:25.720 --> 01:24:30.280 WLWV Board Room: go through everything, but it's a time for us to listen and not respond 512 01:24:30.860 --> 01:24:34.510 WLWV Board Room: to our speakers. We ask that you are cordial. 513 01:24:34.530 --> 01:24:41.669 WLWV Board Room: We ask that you refrain from clapping and bowing, and all of the other exciting things that can come about. 514 01:24:42.080 --> 01:24:47.880 WLWV Board Room: Please keep your comments to 3 min. and 515 01:24:48.450 --> 01:24:57.819 WLWV Board Room: I will say we we usually reserve about 45 min for this time. There have been times where we've gone over many times we go. We stay under, so if there. 516 01:24:58.470 --> 01:25:10.930 WLWV Board Room: if we get to a point where we've gone at that 45 min, Max. Then, as a board, we will collectively have a discussion, and if we want to extend it, then we will, and if we don't, then we won't. So 517 01:25:12.630 --> 01:25:15.130 WLWV Board Room: we. We have a couple of different 518 01:25:15.220 --> 01:25:26.010 WLWV Board Room: processes with this. Now. The first is that the first session is anything that any topic that is part of the board business. We allow 519 01:25:26.550 --> 01:25:34.050 WLWV Board Room: those community members to speak about board business topics. Then we move into a later 520 01:25:34.140 --> 01:25:44.829 WLWV Board Room: public comment from community members that are speaking on topics that are not a part of board business, and then we open it up for non-community members who are talking 521 01:25:44.950 --> 01:25:58.949 WLWV Board Room: about topics that are not part of board business. and that's when they will get their opportunity to speak. So for the first session. We only have one 522 01:26:00.400 --> 01:26:12.320 WLWV Board Room: speaker who would like to speak on board business topics, and that topic is the topic of division 22, and that is becca puskas. Would you please come forward? 523 01:26:26.000 --> 01:26:37.870 WLWV Board Room: First of all. Thank you so much. Everyone in the room and all the board members and everyone supporting dyslexia awareness month. It certainly means a lot to my family, and you know, to a lot of people in the community. 524 01:26:37.970 --> 01:26:48.610 WLWV Board Room: I wanna talk about the division. 22. Compliance agenda. Item. what is Division 22. I just want to read a little snippet from the Oregon Department of Education website. 525 01:26:48.890 --> 01:27:07.150 WLWV Board Room: the division. 22 rules are the educational standards that the Oregon Legislature or the State Board has determined must be met in order to be a standard school district. Compliance with the division 22 standards ensures. Every student in Oregon public schools is provided with a baseline level of service. 526 01:27:07.620 --> 01:27:09.779 WLWV Board Room: So these standards are important. 527 01:27:09.960 --> 01:27:27.900 WLWV Board Room: The State, to my surprise, doesn't collect any independent information. On compliance with these standards, they rely on the districts to self certify. So this agenda item, that you have before you tonight. It's really important, because it's the district's representation to the community, to the School Board and to the State about compliance. 528 01:27:28.460 --> 01:27:37.800 WLWV Board Room: One of the ways that the school districts ensure baseline level of service is by adopting core curriculum that has been through a formal school board. Approved adoption process. 529 01:27:38.390 --> 01:27:58.649 WLWV Board Room: We all know from the public discussion at the March 2023 Board meeting, that our district has not always followed the required process when it comes to adopting reading curriculum. So I was trying to figure out why the division 22 assurances memo doesn't address this, and I've only seen the one posted on the website. So I hope it's addressed further in the discussion tonight, and I hope you'll ask questions. 530 01:27:59.260 --> 01:28:04.180 WLWV Board Room: The only reason I can think of that it might not address. This is, if you think of it like this. 531 01:28:04.260 --> 01:28:17.009 WLWV Board Room: When there was new curriculum approved by the State a couple of years ago, there were 3 options, adopt curriculum off the Ode list independently, adopt curriculum with School Board approval, or postponed for up to 2 years 532 01:28:17.850 --> 01:28:22.849 WLWV Board Room: since the School Board approved a postponement. We're all good. We're in compliance. 533 01:28:23.410 --> 01:28:26.490 WLWV Board Room: and but that is not what how I see it. 534 01:28:26.910 --> 01:28:38.019 WLWV Board Room: And this is why I think it's not right. Division 22 standards don't just apply some of the time they apply all of the time they are about a baseline level of service 535 01:28:38.090 --> 01:28:52.870 WLWV Board Room: for all of our kids. Our school district is still using reading curriculum, the Lucy cockins, units of study and the fountains and Pinell phonics program that has never been on the Ode list and has never been through a required adoption process. 536 01:28:53.270 --> 01:29:03.690 I thought we were past this issue, and I really wasn't planning on being up here tonight. But I really just want to see the district acknowledge this in the discussion and on the form that we send to the State. 537 01:29:04.250 --> 01:29:22.449 WLWV Board Room: I do think the district has a good plan to move forward to correct the situation. The School Board approved a postponement. The district has assembled a curriculum committee involving teachers, as you've just heard about. It's clear the intent to involve the community and seek board approval. We are headed in the right direction. 538 01:29:22.470 --> 01:29:24.210 WLWV Board Room: but we are not there yet. 539 01:29:24.460 --> 01:29:33.889 WLWV Board Room: If you look at the compliance assurance rule that I handed out under Number 3. It says districts must report compliance with the preceding school year. That's what this reporting is about. 540 01:29:34.160 --> 01:29:54.070 WLWV Board Room: So I just really encourage you to ask questions. Make sure you know what the district is certifying and make sure that it's accurate. And I just want to say the last handout I passed out, I think, is the correct form that needs to be submitted, and it has a calling, compliance status and also on the evidence to support compliance. And I don't think that's what we see on the website. 541 01:29:54.240 --> 01:29:55.659 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. Thank you. 542 01:29:59.240 --> 01:30:00.190 WLWV Board Room: Alright. 543 01:30:01.410 --> 01:30:06.849 WLWV Board Room: That is our only community member for board business topic. 544 01:30:06.990 --> 01:30:10.010 WLWV Board Room: this will take us 545 01:30:11.440 --> 01:30:20.550 WLWV Board Room: into board business. And I think we're gonna start with department of teaching and learning. And Dr. Swayson, I'm gonna turn it over to you. 546 01:30:21.830 --> 01:30:23.499 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. Slides, please. 547 01:30:26.800 --> 01:30:40.920 WLWV Board Room: Yes, this is the annual division. 22 standards assurance report, and we always make that report for the previous school year. So when the 548 01:30:41.840 --> 01:30:51.339 WLWV Board Room: the form is submitted, it's talking about what was done in the 2223 school year 549 01:30:51.400 --> 01:30:52.410 WLWV Board Room: next slide. 550 01:30:55.480 --> 01:31:13.340 WLWV Board Room: So yes, these are the overarching standards for elementary and secondary education. Everything that comes from ode in the State of Oregon is 5, 81, and the part of this is 22. Hence the name division 22, 551 01:31:13.750 --> 01:31:15.170 the 552 01:31:15.330 --> 01:31:24.829 WLWV Board Room: It's. It's a compliance piece that says that we have met all of these standards. Many of them 553 01:31:24.830 --> 01:31:45.539 WLWV Board Room: talk about having plans and processes in place, although not all of them. And what's really important to know about them is they're considered the floor, not the ceiling. This is baseline things to have in place, and that addresses why, they're really looking for plans and processes to be in place 554 01:31:45.680 --> 01:31:46.709 WLWV Board Room: next slide. 555 01:31:49.430 --> 01:32:01.960 WLWV Board Room: So there are the rule categories. And there's 50 individual rules on the form, and they are in the categories of teaching and learning. 556 01:32:02.250 --> 01:32:18.009 WLWV Board Room: health and safety, district performance, accountability and human resources and staffing. There are also more standards within teaching and learning and health and safety. The there are subcategories 557 01:32:18.310 --> 01:32:19.300 WLWV Board Room: next slide. 558 01:32:21.440 --> 01:32:48.259 WLWV Board Room: and some of the things. This is just kind of a snapshot where some of them fall. The requirements for instructional time, and that's one that I'll be making a comment on. So that's within teaching and learning as is human sexuality, education, instructional materials, comprehensive school counseling. So this just gives a sense of where these 559 01:32:48.330 --> 01:32:54.900 WLWV Board Room: these are just examples of some of them. I didn't put all of them there next slide. 560 01:32:58.880 --> 01:33:02.450 WLWV Board Room: So the idea here is that what 561 01:33:02.540 --> 01:33:14.130 WLWV Board Room: school districts are required to do? And there was reference made to a form. So by November first make a report to 562 01:33:14.270 --> 01:33:18.219 WLWV Board Room: the school district about compliance from last year. 563 01:33:18.360 --> 01:33:40.170 WLWV Board Room: Then the full form is posted by November fifteenth, because it also includes by that time the minutes from from this School Board meeting, and that's what will be posted on the district website. Ode has made some changes. It used to be that just submitting that you have 564 01:33:40.170 --> 01:34:03.349 WLWV Board Room: have the minutes from the School Board meeting, showing that you have complied was what was posted, and now they've gone to having an actual template with the columns of are you in compliance? Are you not in compliance? And then what would be examples of your of your evidence for that? And so that will be for 2223, 565 01:34:03.350 --> 01:34:11.950 WLWV Board Room: using that template which is required this year for the first time that you will see on the posted on the website. 566 01:34:12.060 --> 01:34:17.330 WLWV Board Room: It'll be before November fifteenth, because we're only on the second day of October. 567 01:34:19.460 --> 01:34:25.900 WLWV Board Room: So the idea of reviewing and following up is something that's 568 01:34:26.170 --> 01:34:51.019 WLWV Board Room: that's part of the process for ode. They very much take a guidance stance, and it is self reporting. But again, it's with looking at your evidence. And some of these things are, you know, kind of duplicate themselves, it'll say, do you have your talented and gifted education plan, for example, posted on your website? So there are things that you know do show up as as being evident 569 01:34:52.350 --> 01:34:53.400 WLWV Board Room: next slide. 570 01:34:57.270 --> 01:35:10.569 WLWV Board Room: So they do waive specific assurances for time to time. One right now is the state of Oregon has had in a graduation requirement that 571 01:35:11.030 --> 01:35:25.979 WLWV Board Room: in addition to credits, you have to have essential skills. And that's been shown, students can demonstrate that through the Osas assessments, and also what are called essential skills assessment 572 01:35:26.100 --> 01:35:27.000 WLWV Board Room: that 573 01:35:27.100 --> 01:35:36.239 WLWV Board Room: is under discussion right now and has not been decided yet by the by, the Legislature. By the State Board of Education. 574 01:35:37.430 --> 01:35:49.579 WLWV Board Room: There is a part where you still have local performance tasks, requirements in all all grade levels, and that has always been in effect, and still is 575 01:35:50.170 --> 01:35:55.319 WLWV Board Room: the other thing that was waived for 2223 is 576 01:35:55.570 --> 01:36:05.899 WLWV Board Room: The PE data collections were suspended because and they will be reinstated. But there were some changes in the legislation 577 01:36:05.920 --> 01:36:22.430 WLWV Board Room: late, and that affects, you know, part way through the year, meeting those number of minutes. But some of these things. When we're talking about evidence in the evidence column, they come from things that are drawn and reported from 578 01:36:22.540 --> 01:36:47.149 WLWV Board Room: state documents. And so again, there's sort of a planned redundancy to it. For example, we have to fill in every year. And it's actually our information technology department that will put in, how many minutes do we have in physical education at all levels? So those are things there's just set reports for those. 579 01:36:47.540 --> 01:36:53.560 WLWV Board Room: But those are 2 that the only 2 that are waived were waived for last year 580 01:36:54.020 --> 01:36:55.070 next slide. 581 01:36:58.220 --> 01:37:03.569 WLWV Board Room: So if a district's out of compliance, they 582 01:37:03.730 --> 01:37:19.210 WLWV Board Room: have, they have to put in a plan for corrective action, and then, if it's not approved as submitted. The again Ode does take a stance of trying to provide some assistance. 583 01:37:19.730 --> 01:37:40.919 WLWV Board Room: and it must be taken this corrective action by the beginning of the next school year, and I'm using as an example for Wesley Wilsonville last year on in this report, when when I gave it, noted that we were out of compliance for the number of minutes for middle level 584 01:37:41.080 --> 01:37:42.040 WLWV Board Room: PE, 585 01:37:42.730 --> 01:38:07.150 WLWV Board Room: so we have a corrective action plan, and that was going to involve looking at. You know, currently, we have a half a year of PE wellness and a half a year of world language, and we were looking at restructuring our elective program. This one was a bit unusual, because meanwhile, in 2223, and by December 2,023 586 01:38:07.150 --> 01:38:16.649 WLWV Board Room: there was a revision that was submitted to the Legislature to look at, amending that 587 01:38:16.910 --> 01:38:18.600 WLWV Board Room: also the minutes were 588 01:38:18.650 --> 01:38:28.139 WLWV Board Room: waived, you know, than for 2223, because all of this came together at the same time. It takes things a while to go through legislation. 589 01:38:28.160 --> 01:38:29.350 So 590 01:38:29.560 --> 01:38:49.060 WLWV Board Room: it was revised. And so that is why Wesley Wilson, Bill, you know, did not go ahead with the corrective action to alter the elective program, because the requirement for the minutes was changed. So that's an example of, you know, the the one 591 01:38:49.140 --> 01:38:59.850 WLWV Board Room: from the previous year that we had not checked, and that we would have had to check again this year, or we had a plan in place, and ode 592 01:39:00.390 --> 01:39:15.949 WLWV Board Room: either accepts or says that your corrective action is not acceptable, and continues to press for other actions to be taken. They have to approve what you've submitted as your corrective action. 593 01:39:16.790 --> 01:39:29.219 WLWV Board Room: The the bottom line is that if you do not comply after you've looked at your corrective action, then state monies can be withheld. 594 01:39:30.910 --> 01:39:55.419 WLWV Board Room: So again. Well, wait. I don't know if there's any questions about that, but this is one example of our district needing to be looking carefully at at compliance with the physical education minutes. And that was there were a series of meetings. That looked at the rationale behind that and looked at the reason for changing it was 595 01:39:55.420 --> 01:40:15.159 WLWV Board Room: equating a number of minutes with what it was meant to accomplish. Sometimes just a quantity of number of minutes is not the way to do that. So they went with looking at. Let's look instead at actually the elements of the activity level of. And how are you working with your middle level PE program 596 01:40:15.490 --> 01:40:16.500 WLWV Board Room: next slide? 597 01:40:17.960 --> 01:40:24.969 WLWV Board Room: So another one. What about instructional materials. postponement, and compliance. 598 01:40:25.020 --> 01:40:27.770 So a school district 599 01:40:28.130 --> 01:40:38.179 WLWV Board Room: may request a postponement for an instructional materials. Adoption and districts do that usually because of a combination of funding. 600 01:40:38.200 --> 01:40:54.330 WLWV Board Room: Sometimes it's things that have built up with several adoptions that have come closer together. We had our math adoption interrupted, and that was okay. We had started it prior to the pandemic 601 01:40:54.470 --> 01:41:08.269 WLWV Board Room: If the postponement is approved and to you have to put the rationale for the postponement in, and it needs to be approved. The district, then. 602 01:41:08.290 --> 01:41:20.390 WLWV Board Room: has the next school year to adopt the instructional materials for the granted postponement. So Wesland Wilsonville. there was a postponement 603 01:41:20.480 --> 01:41:22.330 WLWV Board Room: last March. 604 01:41:22.410 --> 01:41:30.249 WLWV Board Room: And so what that means is because we're reporting this evening on 2,02223, 605 01:41:30.670 --> 01:41:33.379 WLWV Board Room: we are in compliance 606 01:41:33.550 --> 01:41:36.430 WLWV Board Room: for 2,02223. 607 01:41:38.100 --> 01:41:42.980 WLWV Board Room: What we have to do then we now 608 01:41:43.090 --> 01:41:46.929 WLWV Board Room: It was for K 5 literacy materials, and 609 01:41:47.290 --> 01:41:50.679 WLWV Board Room: we have until this 610 01:41:50.700 --> 01:42:05.190 WLWV Board Room: beginning of the 2425 school year to have materials in place, or we will be out of compliance for the 2324 school year, if that makes sense, because we're always looking back. 611 01:42:05.750 --> 01:42:12.620 WLWV Board Room: And so that's the the way that it works. There have been in speaking to questions about 612 01:42:12.800 --> 01:42:25.630 WLWV Board Room: earlier materials not having going gone through the adoption process that the district has acknowledged that there were times when Ode was looking at more. 613 01:42:25.680 --> 01:42:48.890 WLWV Board Room: The process was not as formal, and that there were looking at whether you had materials that had gone through some sort of vetting and not being on the ode list, and you can still do that with instructional materials you can do an independent adoption that's become a more formalized process. 614 01:42:48.910 --> 01:42:57.170 WLWV Board Room: And what you would do if a district chooses to do that, you still have to use the ode rubric to show that 615 01:42:57.230 --> 01:43:14.420 WLWV Board Room: it meets the standards. If you choose to do that, and then you submit it, and they have the prerogative of saying it's approved or not, approved. And I'm just mentioning that because that that was a question, you know, that was brought forward 616 01:43:14.540 --> 01:43:20.890 WLWV Board Room: as I think, has been stated for this current adoption team. 617 01:43:21.060 --> 01:43:31.579 WLWV Board Room: we are definitely using the Oregon Department of Education List, and that's the piece that we will be doing by our third session. 618 01:43:31.620 --> 01:43:33.799 WLWV Board Room: In doing that. 619 01:43:33.920 --> 01:43:44.130 WLWV Board Room: but that's what the postponement and compliance that's how that works. So the big thing to remember is you're always looking at the year 620 01:43:44.530 --> 01:43:49.690 WLWV Board Room: prior to when you're actually reporting next slide. 621 01:43:52.240 --> 01:43:55.519 WLWV Board Room: So the actual report. 622 01:43:55.830 --> 01:44:05.290 WLWV Board Room: the school district is in compliance with all of the division 2223 standards, and I am only reporting for last year 623 01:44:05.560 --> 01:44:20.519 WLWV Board Room: we are on track to have K. 5 literacy instructional materials adopted in the spring and in classrooms in the start of 2425 school year, and we are 624 01:44:20.750 --> 01:44:38.539 WLWV Board Room: now in compliance with the required number of Pm. PE minutes. We always were in compliance for grades. K. 5. And it was just grade 6 through 8. Those they were on a scale where they kept rising every year, and that's the legislative change 625 01:44:39.210 --> 01:44:40.150 WLWV Board Room: next slide. 626 01:44:43.170 --> 01:44:55.600 WLWV Board Room: So just some things that are coming up. This is from Ode they're still looking at and this may be adopted at upcoming meetings. The 627 01:44:55.620 --> 01:45:15.279 WLWV Board Room: essential skills. Graduation requirement is very much under discussion. Whether it will be postponed. There is still a committee looking at that, and then the other. Only other one is the menstrual dignity, and some of the changes that are being discussed are just making it more 628 01:45:15.370 --> 01:45:40.129 WLWV Board Room: doable and more kind of straightforward for school districts to comply with that and some of the times, and for one like ones like that. It's depending on the the size of your school district or across the State. You know that they have looked at that. It doesn't mean on either of those that they would go away necessarily. But those are under discussion. 629 01:45:42.140 --> 01:45:44.070 WLWV Board Room: So that 630 01:45:44.180 --> 01:45:50.240 WLWV Board Room: said, what are your questions or things that may need to be clarified. 631 01:45:54.720 --> 01:45:57.450 WLWV Board Room: Do we have questions? 632 01:45:59.350 --> 01:46:00.640 WLWV Board Room: Clarifications? 633 01:46:03.020 --> 01:46:04.070 WLWV Board Room: Director sloop? 634 01:46:04.170 --> 01:46:10.090 WLWV Board Room: Yeah. So I had asked a question. That you had answered regarding the 635 01:46:10.450 --> 01:46:24.110 WLWV Board Room: drug and alcohol prevention. and how that under those rules it has to be reviewed and updated regularly. And I asked if it was updated regularly due to the Fentanyl crisis that we're dealing with of our students. 636 01:46:24.260 --> 01:46:47.830 WLWV Board Room: And you responded. So I was wondering if you could share that response. Yes, and actually, I appreciate that. Thank you, director, sleep? One of the ones some, you know, in updating instructional materials or in complying with standards that changes every 7 or 8 years. But there's an exception in health education, because information from the Center for Disease Control. 637 01:46:47.830 --> 01:47:04.940 WLWV Board Room: or if there's something that is especially risen to the level of high importance, and in this case it's it's Fentanyl and looking at, do you're not gonna wait until a curriculum adoption, or you're looking at your instructional practices. 638 01:47:04.940 --> 01:47:22.089 WLWV Board Room: So yes, we have done that. And this primarily affects students in grades 6 through 12. Although the great body shot materials in grades K through 5. Although they, although they don't talk as specifically about 639 01:47:22.310 --> 01:47:35.630 WLWV Board Room: all of those substances they have updated. They update every year because it's actually a brochure that children and families get. And then they update the guidebook and the lessons around that 640 01:47:35.780 --> 01:47:42.850 WLWV Board Room: in grades 6, through 8, and in grades 9 through 12 updated information. And actually, there was 641 01:47:43.090 --> 01:48:01.070 WLWV Board Room: discussion around. One of the ways that we're gonna address it in high school is with speakers and with looking at, how do we really really raise the awareness of this in something that is looked at as a crisis. So those are just the specific things we are doing with that 642 01:48:03.420 --> 01:48:04.650 WLWV Board Room: director shoemaker. 643 01:48:07.860 --> 01:48:14.669 WLWV Board Room: So you you've heard this this concern of our being out of compliance right? 644 01:48:14.810 --> 01:48:16.420 WLWV Board Room: And 645 01:48:16.470 --> 01:48:19.710 WLWV Board Room: I'm wondering, is there a way? 646 01:48:20.630 --> 01:48:30.980 WLWV Board Room: I understand the process is for us to tell the State. If we're in compliance or not. is there a way to simply ask the State if we're in compliance? 647 01:48:31.660 --> 01:48:40.080 WLWV Board Room: So I think what was being referenced? Is that the materials that are being used while we're going through the 648 01:48:40.270 --> 01:48:52.200 WLWV Board Room: K 5 literacy materials adoption process are not on the state list, and it's a point that. Yes, that's that's correct. 649 01:48:52.310 --> 01:48:59.239 WLWV Board Room: Again, this report for the 2223 school year we are in compliance with 650 01:48:59.360 --> 01:49:21.760 WLWV Board Room: that. I think the point is, but if they hadn't gone through that, and that actually has been discussed at at previous board meetings around the evidence of a full process which predates some of us. And so we're not handing that off, just saying that we are working with 651 01:49:21.990 --> 01:49:50.169 WLWV Board Room: what we have now before us, and every year have been looking back at the previous year to see if we are in compliance. Once you have materials in place, you have until the next adoption cycle to replace them. So we are in in compliance. Technically, II understand, you know, the comment that was that was brought forward. But it would be as if 652 01:49:50.180 --> 01:50:04.259 WLWV Board Room: if you had something that was not on a state list, are you going to continue year after year after year, to be out of compliance until another adoption cycle comes around is is what that speaks to, and the state of Oregon does not 653 01:50:04.500 --> 01:50:10.720 WLWV Board Room: ask that you do that. It asks, have you for the year. There are. 654 01:50:11.300 --> 01:50:18.630 WLWV Board Room: There's a list of adoption cycles coming up for subject areas, and what you are 655 01:50:18.690 --> 01:50:30.630 WLWV Board Room: required to do is go through the process for that year and be in compliance, and that's the one we took a year's postponement to do justice to the process. 656 01:50:30.950 --> 01:50:31.960 WLWV Board Room: So 657 01:50:32.180 --> 01:50:41.729 WLWV Board Room: yes, we are in compliance. We've checked that several times. And II don't have anything more to add. 658 01:50:41.940 --> 01:50:44.690 WLWV Board Room: if something was and 659 01:50:46.200 --> 01:50:47.970 WLWV Board Room: approved to put forward. 660 01:50:48.050 --> 01:50:54.999 WLWV Board Room: And you know it's continuing to be the materials in use until the next cycle. 661 01:50:55.500 --> 01:51:13.489 WLWV Board Room: It it feels a little bit like a technical discussion of whether we are are not in compliance. Really, my question is, is, have we checked with someone at the State? Yes, we have. We did that verbally last spring? When this came forward. 662 01:51:13.810 --> 01:51:23.429 WLWV Board Room: I do it again when before I make the report, in a couple of areas, just to make sure, because some of them are a little technical around the timelines. Okay. 663 01:51:28.800 --> 01:51:29.820 WLWV Board Room: any other 664 01:51:30.130 --> 01:51:31.950 WLWV Board Room: questions concerns. 665 01:51:34.890 --> 01:51:36.190 WLWV Board Room: Thank you, Dr. Zeissen. 666 01:51:45.290 --> 01:51:49.559 WLWV Board Room: This will take us to the business office. Dr. Hughes. 667 01:51:52.300 --> 01:51:56.310 WLWV Board Room: Good evening, board member. It's so nice to see you tonight. 668 01:51:56.670 --> 01:52:10.590 WLWV Board Room: So I have 2 items that I would like to present it to you. The first one is a financial information for the general fund, and the second ones is the Budget Committee. Appreciation are opened. 669 01:52:13.900 --> 01:52:19.800 WLWV Board Room: I forgot to send a Powerpoint, so 670 01:52:20.000 --> 01:52:22.090 WLWV Board Room: they're working on locking it out. 671 01:52:22.900 --> 01:52:33.770 WLWV Board Room: But the financial information for General Fund Dickman, is the same as we have. From August that I reported to you. 672 01:52:33.980 --> 01:52:37.810 WLWV Board Room: The information for this month is, 673 01:52:38.080 --> 01:52:38.890 WLWV Board Room: okay. 674 01:52:39.320 --> 01:52:47.210 WLWV Board Room: nothing different from the number in here. The GM project is the same at the last report that I present 675 01:52:47.300 --> 01:52:51.180 WLWV Board Room: there are 2 updates that 676 01:52:51.960 --> 01:52:58.959 WLWV Board Room: will have some change in in this report for this coming month. The first item is the 677 01:52:59.050 --> 01:53:09.100 WLWV Board Room: Students investment account that came in the actual world came in stronger than the adopted budget by 1.4 million 678 01:53:09.360 --> 01:53:14.530 WLWV Board Room: and the another Gram is the high schools. 679 01:53:14.750 --> 01:53:22.960 WLWV Board Room: high school success student that came in a little bit less with the 260,000 less than the adopted budget. 680 01:53:23.150 --> 01:53:42.299 WLWV Board Room: So we are in the process of identify qualify fte because we have more 1.4 million more in the sa grant. So we identify qualified employees from general fund to ship over to the Sia grant 681 01:53:42.300 --> 01:54:01.129 WLWV Board Room: in the meantime, we also tried to identify Fta that eco up to around 250,000 to should do general fund in order to ensure the budget. Stay the but the Richard stay within the adopted budget and the actual world from the agency. 682 01:54:01.240 --> 01:54:10.569 WLWV Board Room: So with that changing the year end projected number will be 10, and that will be reported to you by the coming month. 683 01:54:11.000 --> 01:54:19.690 WLWV Board Room: One item that I would like to pull out the different between the adopted budget and the work in budget. 684 01:54:19.870 --> 01:54:25.620 WLWV Board Room: So the adopted butcher, the budget that you adopt this in June. 685 01:54:25.660 --> 01:54:29.990 WLWV Board Room: so we can spend up money on on July first 686 01:54:30.280 --> 01:54:35.340 WLWV Board Room: the work can budget so throughout a year for sample. 687 01:54:35.530 --> 01:54:43.820 WLWV Board Room: If if SIA. Grant, came in 1.4 million less than the adopted budget. 688 01:54:44.000 --> 01:55:06.759 WLWV Board Room: and we have to ship the FDE. From SIA. Grant into general fund. Then the expenditure under the salary and benefits go up more than 1.4 million with a if we don't come back to the board for the supplemental budget or the budget adjusted, then we will violate a budget. 689 01:55:06.830 --> 01:55:27.779 WLWV Board Room: So when we, when that happened, we will come, present the budget as justice, and then that information will go under the the adjusted column, and then the work in Budget E, the combination between the adopted budget and a budget adjusted together to come up through the work in budget. 690 01:55:27.780 --> 01:55:48.849 WLWV Board Room: But in this situation, because we are shifting the general on fund expenditure fte into the Sia Grant. So we are stay within the budget that adopted budget. Because of that we don't need to do any adjusted. So therefore you you will not see any information under the adjusted column. 691 01:55:52.220 --> 01:56:01.980 So that's if my financial information report for the general fund. And I wonder if you have any questions for me before I move to the next item. 692 01:56:08.060 --> 01:56:23.789 WLWV Board Room: Any questions. Quick. Question. Okay? So just to to confirm what I'm hearing correctly, we're moving $250,000 from the Sia fund into the no. Oh, geez! I'm glad I'm confirming it. 693 01:56:24.050 --> 01:56:29.370 WLWV Board Room: Because the student and the high school success. 694 01:56:29.390 --> 01:56:50.059 WLWV Board Room: the actual work came in 260,000 less than the adopted budget. So we going to move Fte up to 260,000 from the High School set into the general fund, and then for the student investment account. 695 01:56:50.060 --> 01:57:07.890 WLWV Board Room: the actual work came in 1.4 million higher than the adapted. So we're going to ship qualify Fta from Sia Grant into general app, we will ship the F. Qualify fte from general fund into the Sia. 696 01:57:09.330 --> 01:57:10.430 WLWV Board Room: So much. 697 01:57:13.080 --> 01:57:23.810 WLWV Board Room: And just to add that we're not unique in that those Grant allocations were adjusted for every school district in Oregon, and that had to do with the 698 01:57:24.030 --> 01:57:31.319 WLWV Board Room: the capital activities tax that's collected to fuel on the Sia grant. And so when 699 01:57:31.380 --> 01:57:42.220 WLWV Board Room: almost like what Dr. Soiss, sometimes you're working a year with a year behind or a year ahead, and because those funds came in, they gave us estimates. 700 01:57:42.340 --> 01:58:08.189 WLWV Board Room: or when we're in the budget process. When it became more firm numbers, they reallocated to all the districts. So everybody's going through that adjustment. Yeah. Because when we view the budget, we start a process as soon as January, and then I meet them with a school in February, and then Digital Learning department provide information for us. Like early March. 701 01:58:08.780 --> 01:58:19.080 WLWV Board Room: April, and then the actual world won't come in until September. Just recently, like 2, 3 weeks ago. So that's why a lot of time 702 01:58:19.210 --> 01:58:39.609 WLWV Board Room: the special revenue with the grant and contract that come under the special revenue. We rarely meet a hundred percent of the adopted budget one way, a little bit less or more. Unless we have a 2 year. A world, then we know for sure what the next year look like. 703 01:58:46.330 --> 01:58:49.729 WLWV Board Room: So my next items. do you have questions? 704 01:58:50.830 --> 01:58:54.580 WLWV Board Room: The next items I have see the Budget Committee vacancy. 705 01:58:54.590 --> 01:59:19.019 WLWV Board Room: So at current the District Health, 2 portion open portion number 2, and position number 5. This position open, due to the aspiration of the term of Mrs. Helena Seoul, and the second is the election shoemaker as board member as up. July first, of 2,023. 706 01:59:19.560 --> 01:59:23.650 WLWV Board Room: So portion number 2 is a 3 year portion 707 01:59:23.830 --> 01:59:34.820 WLWV Board Room: years of service will start fiscal year 2324, and a budget year will be 2425, 2526, and 2627. 708 01:59:35.500 --> 01:59:49.679 WLWV Board Room: Position number 5 is a 2 year home. and this will be the fiscal year will be 2324, but the budget year will be 2425, and 2526. 709 01:59:49.960 --> 02:00:05.389 WLWV Board Room: So if I could get the approval from the Board to declared it open vacancy, so we can post it through the local newspaper school newspaper. And on the digital website. Okay, do I hear a motion? 710 02:00:07.460 --> 02:00:13.310 WLWV Board Room: I move the board approve to declare budget committee position number 2 and number 5 vacant. 711 02:00:15.670 --> 02:00:16.570 WLWV Board Room: Third. 712 02:00:17.810 --> 02:00:20.479 WLWV Board Room: any questions. Discussion. 713 02:00:23.440 --> 02:00:39.120 WLWV Board Room: I just have one quick question for the the people that apply for the Land use committee. Will we be notifying them of these openings on the Budget Committee in case they're interested, or they'll see those in the newspaper or wherever it's posted 714 02:00:39.850 --> 02:00:43.500 WLWV Board Room: for the long range planning committee. Goodness, yes. 715 02:00:43.560 --> 02:00:45.460 sorry 716 02:00:46.510 --> 02:01:02.569 WLWV Board Room: we wouldn't do a personal outreach to them. But we'll just generally have to it. It doesn't mean that any of you couldn't make a personal connection, but generally the district call individuals and ask them to apply 717 02:01:04.820 --> 02:01:06.180 WLWV Board Room: any other 718 02:01:07.210 --> 02:01:10.830 WLWV Board Room: questions concerns. No. Ms. Douglas, would you call the vote 719 02:01:11.530 --> 02:01:18.539 WLWV Board Room: director? Shoemaker? Yes, director, sloop. Aye, chair, Taylor. Aye, vice chair, Wyatt. 720 02:01:19.190 --> 02:01:21.990 WLWV Board Room: Jack de Vidal. Aye, thank you. 721 02:01:24.260 --> 02:01:41.100 WLWV Board Room: Thank you so much. So with this. Tomorrow we will post appreciation. And then we will close the application on November thirtieth, and then we hope to have the candidate come to meet with the ball on December on December sixth for the interview. 722 02:01:41.200 --> 02:01:44.000 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. Thank you so much. 723 02:01:45.740 --> 02:01:46.610 WLWV Board Room: Alright 724 02:01:47.850 --> 02:01:52.800 WLWV Board Room: I'll just do a quick board check. Does anybody need a break? Anybody need anything? Okay? 725 02:01:54.020 --> 02:01:57.690 WLWV Board Room: I think I'd like a drink of water, too. So just we'll take a 726 02:01:57.940 --> 02:02:00.169 WLWV Board Room: quick 2 min recess. Just 727 02:02:08.200 --> 02:02:12.679 WLWV Board Room: okay, so we're gonna move into our second 728 02:02:12.790 --> 02:02:19.480 WLWV Board Room: public comment section. And we do have a number of of speakers. 729 02:02:19.560 --> 02:02:23.929 WLWV Board Room: And I'm just going to ask you once again to refrain from 730 02:02:23.970 --> 02:02:33.809 WLWV Board Room: clapping or booing. and I know that sometimes we get excited about topics and whatnot, and we did get a few claps last time. So work with me. 731 02:02:33.920 --> 02:02:37.250 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. 732 02:02:37.960 --> 02:02:39.709 WLWV Board Room: So we have 733 02:02:40.690 --> 02:02:58.599 WLWV Board Room: 2 separate topics for discussion. Most of them are on dyslexia awareness, and then we've got one on the OP-in Lander sales so similar to a grocery line. You guys are kind of a big cartoon, and then we've got one individual would just 734 02:02:58.910 --> 02:03:07.820 WLWV Board Room: a gallon of milk, so So I'm going to call forward and allow Dean, sir, to cut the line 735 02:03:08.690 --> 02:03:26.449 WLWV Board Room: and speak on OP. And Lander, and then we'll get to the big grocery cart. You guys could be so kind. Thank you. Lot of things, but never a gallon of milk before I start. I do just want to commend you all for the compassionate and transparent and honest reception of the families 736 02:03:26.460 --> 02:03:33.950 WLWV Board Room: and the advocacy and support. It's it's so important that we see this connection as well. So thank you all for for all of that. 737 02:03:34.160 --> 02:03:46.490 WLWV Board Room: My name is Dean, sir. I live in West Lynn. I wanna talk about Opin Lander. Tonight? I was around in 1962. But Opin Lander wasn't. It came about 10 years later, in 1973. 738 02:03:46.540 --> 02:04:02.489 WLWV Board Room: For 50 years that property has been used as a community resource school district very actively early on, and then, in subsequent years, more community engagement and of recent. There's a declining school usage of it. So you declared surplus property in 2021. 739 02:04:02.580 --> 02:04:04.010 WLWV Board Room: Shortly thereafter 740 02:04:04.320 --> 02:04:16.269 WLWV Board Room: the school district, to your credit, initiated conversations with the city of West Lynn, with presumably the intent to keep that as a community asset. And again, I wasn't part of those meetings. I was at arm's length. 741 02:04:16.330 --> 02:04:21.730 WLWV Board Room: but the meetings kind of broke down. There were, for whatever reason, the meetings broke down. 742 02:04:21.850 --> 02:04:48.349 WLWV Board Room: A group of neighbors and myself got together. I formed for a friends of Opin Lander, and we brought the parties back to the table that resulted in you all negotiating and talking some more. A little more cordial engagement, which was great, and then it ultimately resulted in a sales contract. Make sure I get my years right. Sales agreement was signed. Excuse me, was was generated in 2021, the middle of 2021. 743 02:04:48.580 --> 02:04:54.699 WLWV Board Room: The terms of it. It was actually signed at the end of the year in December by the city, and in January by the school district 744 02:04:54.810 --> 02:04:58.019 WLWV Board Room: as required by the sales agreement. 745 02:04:58.090 --> 02:05:09.830 WLWV Board Room: There was an appraisal. There was an a joint appraisal, I think a lot of us were surprised where that number came from, but and in retrospect we look at how it was put together, and it seemed to make some sense. 746 02:05:09.870 --> 02:05:21.489 WLWV Board Room: The sales agreement required that a bond measure be passed which city of West Lynn, the residents of the West Lynn did at a 2 to one margin this was in 22 in May. 747 02:05:21.610 --> 02:05:22.999 WLWV Board Room: and since then 748 02:05:23.280 --> 02:05:52.709 WLWV Board Room: the 2 parties have been at an impasse. The sales agreement has not been executed, the property has not been transferred, and it's just disappointing. It's frustrating part of the delay in the cycle right now since last June, when the trial was supposed to occur is that the judge didn't have enough space on his docket. At least that's what I was told for a 7 day jury trial. So it's been deferred. Now, the decision, the legal decision out to the middle of 2024, so 6, 7, 8 months from now. 749 02:05:53.040 --> 02:06:04.619 WLWV Board Room: my our request, and I should say that we are very supportive of the school district. Some people have come to me and said, Hey, why aren't we campaigning against the bond measure that's coming up right now 750 02:06:04.620 --> 02:06:27.760 WLWV Board Room: as a point of leverage. And I told him I said, that's just not what we want in this school district. We want good schools. We know we have to pay for them. This issue is is, it's about money, but it's separate from that. So II want you to know that we're trying to keep this in a positive attitude. But our ask is that we settle. We don't run up the legal fees anymore that's whittling away at the money that's really coming out of all of our pockets. 751 02:06:27.760 --> 02:06:38.960 WLWV Board Room: and that you sit down in good faith with the city, maybe take another run or 2 or 3 or 4. We've got 7 or 8 months to do this, and let's get this behind us. So thank you all for your hard work and the time I appreciate it. 752 02:06:44.290 --> 02:06:47.950 WLWV Board Room: and we will transition into 753 02:06:48.000 --> 02:06:53.940 WLWV Board Room: dyslexia. Awareness in our first speaker is Sarah Lorenz. 754 02:07:05.620 --> 02:07:27.540 WLWV Board Room: Thank you, Sarah Lorenz Wesley, and I'm gonna refrain from just spending 3 min doing cartwheels up here. My girlfriends here know I'm serious about that. I'm just so excited this has been for me 12 years in the making. And really it's all due to these lovely parents behind me who have been advocating. But what really comes down to 755 02:07:27.540 --> 02:07:36.860 WLWV Board Room: is the 5 of you Board members. I hope that you recognize and understand because of tonight just how powerful 756 02:07:36.860 --> 02:07:47.409 your positions are in those chairs that you tonight showed a beautiful example of the change that you could make happen here in our school district. 757 02:07:47.410 --> 02:08:12.300 WLWV Board Room: So thank you. I know some of you really fought hard for tonight to happen. I appreciate your fervent efforts. And also I wanted to share that tonight, as you mentioned, Julie Fraser was over at the city of Westland. They had their city council meeting there, and, thanks to her, she had initiated, and our mayor read off a proclamation for the first time ever tonight that in the city of Wesley it's dyslexia awareness 758 02:08:12.300 --> 02:08:28.790 WLWV Board Room: month. So we have 2 things history in the making here an official declaration here, recognition for dyslexia, awareness in our school district and and then also for our city. So thanks again, this represents, you know, 20% of our population, both our students, and then also 759 02:08:28.920 --> 02:08:36.710 WLWV Board Room: our coworkers and our adults. Dyslexia is something that you never grow out of. If you looked around the room tonight in all of our red shirts. 760 02:08:36.880 --> 02:08:40.599 WLWV Board Room: It's a hidden disability. You would have no idea 761 02:08:40.620 --> 02:09:03.920 WLWV Board Room: who is dyslexic or who isn't, and that's part of the difficulty of it. I appreciate that. You, you know, recognize all these different awareness my husband here always points out, hey? Don't forget the the left handed Awareness month. He's always reminding me of that one, but he also understands that when it comes to education, reading is the foundation of what we do, anyone that comes and 762 02:09:03.920 --> 02:09:28.480 WLWV Board Room: buys a home here in Weslin or Wilsonville, or taxpayers. They expect. The one thing they really really expect is that you would teach our children how to read. And right now, as I've shared before, with only 56% of our third graders reaching benchmark for being able to read, that's just not acceptable. So I appreciate that you also have that same heart. And you wanted to 763 02:09:28.620 --> 02:09:54.640 really take a deeper look at what are we maybe missing? How can we improve our literacy? The good news is, there is a solution, and we don't have to look far. Neighboring school districts like like Oswego are about 5 years ahead of us. And this change, it does start with dyslexia awareness, and then the other pieces, of course, are adopting that new curriculum and teacher training. So, although tonight is really an exciting night and certainly a night of celebration, I do hope 764 02:09:54.640 --> 02:10:08.300 WLWV Board Room: that you use it, and all of this wonderful momentum for really just a springboard for adopting those those next steps. Change can be really hard if you make it, and change can be really easy if you embrace it. Thank you. 765 02:10:09.180 --> 02:10:13.730 WLWV Board Room: Oh, Whoa! Whoa! Whoa, please. No claps, please. Yeah, please. Thank you. 766 02:10:14.960 --> 02:10:19.079 WLWV Board Room: Next speaker, Cindy Singh. 767 02:10:19.900 --> 02:10:20.740 Method. 768 02:10:22.180 --> 02:10:23.390 WLWV Board Room: Okay, thank you. 769 02:10:26.700 --> 02:10:30.330 Tracy. Warm oil. Am I saying that right? 770 02:10:31.140 --> 02:10:32.730 WLWV Board Room: She left. Okay? 771 02:10:36.540 --> 02:10:37.800 Kara Clark. 772 02:10:46.140 --> 02:11:14.740 WLWV Board Room: I just speak. That's so much. I wanna say, I wanna take a moment to thank Director Sloop and Vidal for your presentation on dyslexia awareness month. I hope you know how deeply meaningful that is to me and the community who have been living through a time when dyslexia has been considered an unspeakable word. Over the last 10 months I've been sharing the stories of my children and the struggles that our family have faced in order to start raising awareness of dyslexia, and then a in the inequities they face. In our district 773 02:11:14.960 --> 02:11:20.259 WLWV Board Room: there are other parents who have also been brave enough to come here and speak up about our experiences. 774 02:11:20.290 --> 02:11:29.899 WLWV Board Room: Our family story is not unique. These stories are hauntingly similar, and I hope that this district can make it a priority to make changes to interrupt the continued cycle. 775 02:11:29.990 --> 02:11:36.650 WLWV Board Room: However, today I want to talk about myself, and why I want my children to have confidence with what it means to have dyslexia. 776 02:11:36.740 --> 02:12:03.430 WLWV Board Room: I am an undiagnosed dyslexic who didn't know until I was 40 years old. I went through my entire K. 12 education in Weslin, Wilsonville, and never knew, but felt less than my peers when I was trying to help my children, and was educating myself, everything became clear. I have so many memories that are small, and to most people would be insignificant, but over time compounded themselves into losing my sense of self, and took away my confidence. 777 02:12:03.500 --> 02:12:13.600 WLWV Board Room: I have dealt with anxiety for as long as I can remember, and I learned to protect myself by disqualifying my intelligence and apologizing. When I speak my mind in my trauma. 778 02:12:13.780 --> 02:12:25.479 WLWV Board Room: I took on the view of myself from my educators. I was invisible. I was a mediocre student. Despite effort. I was always a slow reader, and I was told multiple times that I just wasn't driven. 779 02:12:25.800 --> 02:12:33.240 WLWV Board Room: I remember every paper handed back with the sea of red ink. I can remember always being uncomfortable and in survival mode. 780 02:12:33.690 --> 02:12:44.379 WLWV Board Room: I remember one specific creative writing topic when I was a freshman that I put my heart and soul on the page, and the next day the teacher thought I had plagiarized it because it was too good. 781 02:12:44.720 --> 02:12:46.500 WLWV Board Room: too good to be from me. 782 02:12:47.080 --> 02:13:06.860 WLWV Board Room: I have the most amazing parents who told me all the time that I was loved, and that I could do anything. I put my mind to, but even that can't mend the image that is built from 13 years of educational tests, papers, and verbal cues, that I was not one of the intelligent ones, one of the kids of value. I carry that with me. 783 02:13:07.410 --> 02:13:15.109 I learned about dyslexia. I finally found myself and understood on a deeper level that I no longer need to carry this emotional baggage. 784 02:13:15.390 --> 02:13:24.770 WLWV Board Room: I have value. and I work entering the world. I will not let my kids be invisible and not know their worth. Dyslexia, awareness. 785 02:13:25.010 --> 02:13:34.280 WLWV Board Room: We'll create a world that is ready to see them for their value and let them access their potential in a way that doesn't cause unnecessary anxiety and emotional harm. 786 02:13:34.340 --> 02:13:36.069 WLWV Board Room: I will continue to work. 787 02:13:36.160 --> 02:13:49.289 WLWV Board Room: On no longer apologizing for speaking up, and hope my children will have enough strength to do the same. And I want to thank Doctor Ludwig for the call out earlier today I'm just a parent, and I appreciate the fact that you understand that 788 02:13:49.400 --> 02:13:56.619 WLWV Board Room: we're pushing. But I'm pushing you just as much as I push myself. and I appreciate all of your time. Thank you. 789 02:14:11.560 --> 02:14:31.890 WLWV Board Room: Hi. My name is Sarah Melland. I've been in education for the last 14 years working as a classroom teacher, a reading specialist and instructional coach, and I'm currently a structured literacy teacher. For 7 years I was lucky enough to teach at Stafford Primary school, and as a Westland High School graduate. My love and gratitude for this district are deeply rooted 790 02:14:32.040 --> 02:14:41.640 WLWV Board Room: over the 11 years that I spent as a classroom teacher I taught second through eighth grade. One thing that each class had in common was. There were always students who are having a difficult time reading 791 02:14:41.790 --> 02:15:05.359 WLWV Board Room: every year there were a handful of kids that I just couldn't reach. I was doing everything I'd learned in grad school, following the curriculum and taking tips from other teachers. But nothing really worked, as I remember each of those frustrated faces and their struggles. I now realize that the majority of these students likely had dyslexia. While I was struggling to teach my struggling readers, I reached out to one of the outstanding learning specialists at Stafford. 792 02:15:05.560 --> 02:15:14.570 WLWV Board Room: She introduced me to the Wilson reading curriculum. I eagerly accepted the manual and went off to see what I could do. Unfortunately, without any training, it was not a lot. 793 02:15:14.870 --> 02:15:18.739 I had students in my second grade who didn't even know all of their letter sounds 794 02:15:18.870 --> 02:15:26.439 WLWV Board Room: as their peers were silently reading. Just write books. These students were flipping through pages, looking at pictures and pretending to read. 795 02:15:26.760 --> 02:15:34.849 WLWV Board Room: While I was out on maternity leave, I decided, would be a great opportunity to learn a little more about dyslexia, so I could better serve my students. When I returned in the fall 796 02:15:35.290 --> 02:15:39.169 WLWV Board Room: that winter changed everything for me. I didn't even know where to begin. 797 02:15:39.260 --> 02:15:42.189 WLWV Board Room: So I started with the Wilson course, because that was all I knew. 798 02:15:42.300 --> 02:15:52.040 WLWV Board Room: They use the Orton Gillingham approach, and is founded in the science of reading. The science of reading was a term I'd never heard before, and the more I learned the further down the rabbit hole I fell. 799 02:15:52.370 --> 02:16:02.750 I was determined to return to school in the fall, and be the best advocate and support for these students that I could be. However, the more I learned, the more overwhelmed I became. 800 02:16:03.020 --> 02:16:10.989 WLWV Board Room: How was I going to help these students in the short rotations during reader's workshop. Why didn't I learn about any of this in graduate school? 801 02:16:11.350 --> 02:16:16.549 WLWV Board Room: How could the curriculum and Guru I worshipped be letting beginning readers down 802 02:16:17.100 --> 02:16:28.480 WLWV Board Room: when I came to the realization that many of the things I had been doing to help students was, in fact, actually adding to their frustration and confusion as they desperately tried to read. I cried. 803 02:16:28.890 --> 02:16:34.469 WLWV Board Room: I cried in my own frustration for the loss of time, that I could have been helping students in my class. 804 02:16:34.570 --> 02:16:38.509 WLWV Board Room: and for all of the kids who I felt that I had personally disappointed. 805 02:16:38.809 --> 02:16:42.040 So the new question for me became now what 806 02:16:42.650 --> 02:16:48.189 WLWV Board Room: that ultimately led me to leave my teaching position in the district and start a business in structured literacy. 807 02:16:48.440 --> 02:16:55.320 Our clients often have the misconception that they just aren't smart, or they just aren't good at reading. 808 02:16:55.730 --> 02:17:13.839 WLWV Board Room: They have never been given the tools or time to realize their true potential. which is what brings me here today to thank you for your efforts and the changes that you are making in the district. We have current or former clients from Stafford, Willamette, Cedar, Oak, Lowrey, Sunset, Trillium, and Rosemont rich. 809 02:17:13.969 --> 02:17:31.189 WLWV Board Room: It's exciting to know that they will be receiving structured literacy to help support their ieps or circle of support interventions, and that there are literacy coaches who have received some is me training in the school's coaching teachers. I'm so grateful for all that you're doing, and that no teacher or student has to feel like they're failing. 810 02:17:31.540 --> 02:17:34.120 WLWV Board Room: I can't wait to see what else is to come. Thank you. 811 02:17:40.900 --> 02:17:44.930 WLWV Board Room: I believe it, says Maggie Travers 812 02:17:46.440 --> 02:17:52.929 WLWV Board Room: Traversal, I'm sorry I didn't see the oh, on there! That's some fancy writing you got there 813 02:17:53.100 --> 02:17:54.000 WLWV Board Room: at all. 814 02:17:54.299 --> 02:18:13.369 WLWV Board Room: Hi! I'm Maggie Traverso. I'm a Westland resident. I've spoken here before, and I just wanted to share my gratitude with director, Sloop, and Director Vidal and all of you board members for this amazing evening. Recognizing dyslexia awareness, and Dr. Seison and Dr. Ludwig and I just have a few little 815 02:18:13.389 --> 02:18:17.919 WLWV Board Room: badges of flair to to share with you, and then also 816 02:18:18.100 --> 02:18:29.760 WLWV Board Room: just the events that were mentioned earlier. So I'm gonna put these over in the same basket that Sarah provided again. Thank you. We appreciate all that you're doing 817 02:18:37.910 --> 02:18:39.040 WLWV Board Room: here a day. 818 02:18:44.200 --> 02:18:45.160 WLWV Board Room: No, Kara. 819 02:18:49.420 --> 02:18:53.749 WLWV Board Room: And last, but not least, Julie Fraser. 820 02:18:59.969 --> 02:19:01.940 WLWV Board Room: Good evening. 821 02:19:02.530 --> 02:19:13.600 WLWV Board Room: yeah. I was at the city earlier today. This week, actually in 2015. This exact week was the same time that my oldest was first diagnosed with dyslexia. 822 02:19:14.000 --> 02:19:22.280 WLWV Board Room: So it's a really important time right now, and I'm so grateful to see that the district is not recognizing dyslexia awareness. 823 02:19:22.620 --> 02:19:31.089 WLWV Board Room: so students with dyslexia are often misunderstood because they are so bright when they so, and but they still struggle to read and write. 824 02:19:31.510 --> 02:19:40.169 WLWV Board Room: Recognizing dyslexia is so helpful to the community because those students with dyslexia grow up to be adults with dyslexia. 825 02:19:40.850 --> 02:19:53.880 WLWV Board Room: People with dyslexia have the soft skills that companies and employers are looking for in today's workplace. Their strengths include creativity, adaptability, leadership, innovation, problem solving and critical thinking 826 02:19:54.240 --> 02:20:02.990 WLWV Board Room: dyslexics cannot only solve a problem with their outside box thinking, but they can also determine simpler ways to get you to the same results 827 02:20:04.100 --> 02:20:09.300 WLWV Board Room: as adults with dyslexia. They often feel that their learning differences have helped them to succeed. 828 02:20:09.610 --> 02:20:18.309 WLWV Board Room: Some examples of dyslexic thinking in individuals are Carol Mosley Braun, who is the first African American woman elected to the US. Senate. 829 02:20:18.770 --> 02:20:28.610 WLWV Board Room: She's quoted as saying, we need to encourage these kids to believe in themselves, because if they are taught to they will. Gavin Newsom, the Governor of California. 830 02:20:28.730 --> 02:20:36.189 WLWV Board Room: He also has dyslexia, and he's quoted as saying that he will never forget reading in front of a classroom. While everyone was laughing. 831 02:20:36.900 --> 02:20:41.359 WLWV Board Room: Charles Schwab, founder and chairman of the Charles Schwab Corporation. 832 02:20:41.490 --> 02:20:52.730 WLWV Board Room: Learning differences weren't acknowledged during his childhood. He has said that you're either slow or stupid. people would say, Why don't you do better? Just work harder? 833 02:20:53.450 --> 02:21:04.100 WLWV Board Room: These are similar words that are said to many children and adults with dyslexia even today. But these times they are changing. So thank you so much for recognizing the one and 5 834 02:21:04.500 --> 02:21:11.149 WLWV Board Room: the children and adults that experience dyslexia and learning differences. I sincerely appreciate it. Thank you. 835 02:21:18.990 --> 02:21:27.810 WLWV Board Room: And we'll conclude our public comment for the evening and 836 02:21:30.160 --> 02:21:35.380 WLWV Board Room: takes us into important dates for the Board and 837 02:21:35.680 --> 02:21:42.779 WLWV Board Room: just want to bring it to your attention that our 1016, our October sixteenth meeting, our work session 838 02:21:42.930 --> 02:21:45.849 WLWV Board Room: has been canceled for 839 02:21:45.890 --> 02:21:47.379 WLWV Board Room: our school visits. 840 02:21:47.760 --> 02:21:51.030 WLWV Board Room: and Dr. Ludwig is passing out. 841 02:21:52.380 --> 02:21:54.630 WLWV Board Room: I'm just passing down the dates 842 02:21:56.420 --> 02:21:58.090 WLWV Board Room: so that 843 02:21:58.220 --> 02:22:02.279 WLWV Board Room: board members can reference. Which meeting you're talking about. Okay, thank you. 844 02:22:03.080 --> 02:22:12.299 WLWV Board Room: It's it's similar to the list, but maybe just a different visual. So we can see which our board meetings and which our work sessions, which ones are open. And 845 02:22:13.540 --> 02:22:15.740 WLWV Board Room: so the 846 02:22:15.910 --> 02:22:22.540 WLWV Board Room: October sixteenth work session we've canceled because we'll be doing our student our excuse, not student, our school 847 02:22:22.700 --> 02:22:24.700 WLWV Board Room: visit 848 02:22:25.010 --> 02:22:37.810 WLWV Board Room: and then we had a goal that we set as a part of our 4 goals. where we wanted to reach out and have 2 student listening sessions. That was one of the objectives that we set as a 849 02:22:38.250 --> 02:22:44.020 WLWV Board Room: collectively as a board, to make sure that we could set some attainable things that align to the district goals. 850 02:22:44.190 --> 02:22:49.870 WLWV Board Room: and I am proposing to all of you this evening that we 851 02:22:50.120 --> 02:22:51.940 WLWV Board Room: consider using 852 02:22:52.580 --> 02:22:59.229 WLWV Board Room: our work session on November thirteenth for a student engagement session 853 02:22:59.270 --> 02:23:10.540 WLWV Board Room: with Wilsonville high school students. We've previously done it with middle school students. I thought it might be a good opportunity for us to talk to our high school students about their experiences within the schools. 854 02:23:10.690 --> 02:23:13.909 WLWV Board Room: and then the other proposal would be 855 02:23:14.260 --> 02:23:24.760 WLWV Board Room: for our February twelfth work session to do in our second student engagement se session with Weselen High school students. So we would 856 02:23:24.820 --> 02:23:32.370 WLWV Board Room: use those 2 in lieu of those 2 work sessions, we would have the student engagement. And we can figure out. I'm sorry. 857 02:23:33.840 --> 02:23:35.579 WLWV Board Room: Well. 858 02:23:35.980 --> 02:23:42.420 WLWV Board Room: that's just for the first 2 to meet the the, the objective that we had. Now we also can 859 02:23:42.490 --> 02:23:51.220 WLWV Board Room: discuss using another session for Riverside if we want to add one. So I'm not opposed to that either. Just so that we get all through. Okay. 860 02:23:51.420 --> 02:23:54.140 WLWV Board Room: So maybe we would use the next work session. 861 02:23:54.250 --> 02:23:59.119 WLWV Board Room: which would be a Yes, April fifteenth. 862 02:23:59.580 --> 02:24:02.770 WLWV Board Room: and we would have Riverside. 863 02:24:04.870 --> 02:24:09.579 WLWV Board Room: and that does give those students some time to actually have an opinion, since it's all new 864 02:24:09.760 --> 02:24:17.250 WLWV Board Room: and then to get some feedback on what their experience has been like in the stem program, and so on and so forth. So 865 02:24:18.500 --> 02:24:22.809 WLWV Board Room: do any of you find any fault, or have any questions about that. 866 02:24:22.830 --> 02:24:24.419 WLWV Board Room: Dr. Ludwig. Anything to add? 867 02:24:25.370 --> 02:24:36.519 WLWV Board Room: For your your board goal, number 2, which is to host a work session to learn about several of the district implemented systems that build confidence, confidence and self-efficacy. 868 02:24:36.570 --> 02:24:54.949 WLWV Board Room: That would mean holding another work session that's not listed here. So be a special. It would be just another one we would need to add to the calendar, got you and we had, we could add, well, it's up to to the collective board. We could add a work session and do it prior to a board meeting. 869 02:24:55.060 --> 02:24:58.270 WLWV Board Room: so that we could get her, maybe a 5 instead of 870 02:25:00.110 --> 02:25:01.820 would you all be open to 871 02:25:02.070 --> 02:25:04.750 WLWV Board Room: to adding one to a 872 02:25:06.020 --> 02:25:08.289 WLWV Board Room: existing board meeting and showing up an hour early. 873 02:25:09.790 --> 02:25:15.680 WLWV Board Room: Okay. and what's a good date for that, should we? 874 02:25:20.800 --> 02:25:23.879 WLWV Board Room: Yeah, we could do that. Why don't we use the December fourth 875 02:25:24.220 --> 02:25:25.620 WLWV Board Room: meeting for that? 876 02:25:32.580 --> 02:25:35.329 WLWV Board Room: And does. December fourth. Is there anyone out of 877 02:25:35.890 --> 02:25:37.640 gone during that time? 878 02:25:42.560 --> 02:25:52.140 WLWV Board Room: Better question for me. Our work sessions are generally 2 h long, so instead of coming at 5. 879 02:25:52.560 --> 02:25:59.990 WLWV Board Room: Would it be possible to come at 4? Yes, that's fine that works. Does that work for everyone? Or thank you. 880 02:26:00.900 --> 02:26:03.420 WLWV Board Room: director Shoemaker, does that work for your retirement schedule. 881 02:26:05.910 --> 02:26:07.020 Okay? 882 02:26:07.190 --> 02:26:26.159 WLWV Board Room: And it doesn't need to happen tonight. He's got a little bit of time, but I appreciate you giving us the heads up so Staff can begin to prepare for these, and especially with the student engagement ones. We need students there. So you know, that helps with the board goal number 2, where you want us to. Provide a work session. 883 02:26:26.190 --> 02:26:29.500 WLWV Board Room: If you could let us know which one of the 884 02:26:29.860 --> 02:26:37.409 WLWV Board Room: systems they each. We could talk about each one of them for 2 h, or give you lots of information. 885 02:26:37.450 --> 02:26:40.240 WLWV Board Room: so maybe we could have Ms. Douglas 886 02:26:40.390 --> 02:26:48.729 WLWV Board Room: send out doodle poll. And we could kind of work through because there is a system of professional growth 887 02:26:49.440 --> 02:26:57.360 WLWV Board Room: assessments for learning, social, emotional learning, or equitable inclusive practices. If you want to pick one of those. 888 02:26:57.530 --> 02:27:01.230 WLWV Board Room: then we would know how to prepare for that. That'd be fine. W. Would it be okay if 889 02:27:01.240 --> 02:27:06.170 WLWV Board Room: we give you. How much time do you need for that? Since we do have school walkthroughs? I'm sure 890 02:27:06.230 --> 02:27:28.729 WLWV Board Room: we're gonna learn some things as we walk through schools that might trigger a topic of discussion. But how much lead time do you need for the staff? Give us a month or a few weeks, and we just need to know which staff have to be at this meeting and because we would, we would take at least the topic, and then work with the chair and the vice chair to figure out 891 02:27:29.900 --> 02:27:38.569 WLWV Board Room: how to get more specifics about where we're going. With that, so I can. I can see some back and forth too, so, and then I'll reach out to you each, and we can talk about 892 02:27:38.590 --> 02:27:39.740 WLWV Board Room: if there's something 893 02:27:39.780 --> 02:27:42.719 WLWV Board Room: on the tip of your tongue that you want to learn more about. So 894 02:27:46.110 --> 02:27:47.279 WLWV Board Room: anything else 895 02:27:49.170 --> 02:27:51.659 WLWV Board Room: can I ask question about the 896 02:27:52.170 --> 02:28:02.200 WLWV Board Room: the student engagement sessions about like recruitment or or having students selected to be there. 897 02:28:02.200 --> 02:28:26.860 WLWV Board Room: will we be informed about that process, or is it okay? Okay, great. And then it would be nice to give the students. I'm sure we'll do this, but a way to ask us questions out loud and also written in case there, they don't want to speak out loud. That's always nice to offer them both those options if they have questions for us. Yeah, just briefly, in the past, you know, we've put forward teacher, the principals. 898 02:28:27.140 --> 02:28:39.629 WLWV Board Room: The idea of the engagement session and and students. We've also heard from the Board that they'd like that student group to be representative of the school. So I'm thinking about 899 02:28:40.150 --> 02:28:43.620 WLWV Board Room: gender representation grade, level. 900 02:28:44.410 --> 02:28:47.100 active in various things, you know, 901 02:28:48.160 --> 02:29:15.460 WLWV Board Room: divert of diverse groups, so that you're hearing from multiple experiences. And maybe not just the Asb students, for example. And so we work hard. And then just also some of the limitations, at least for middle school it was who could get there whose families could get them. There may not be that much for high school, but we want to think about how busy our students are and who's available those evenings. So we'll do our best to get a representative group. 902 02:29:15.810 --> 02:29:19.470 WLWV Board Room: Well, I think the other thing that was unique about the experience was 903 02:29:19.530 --> 02:29:24.430 WLWV Board Room: that we remove parents from the room, and it was just students. And 904 02:29:24.490 --> 02:29:31.759 WLWV Board Room: when you remove parents from the room, you're really surprised at what students truly think about their school experience because they're not 905 02:29:33.440 --> 02:29:41.409 just filtering out the words that they've been indoctrined into. And we don't know what people watch at night on their Tvs. We don't know what they're listening to. 906 02:29:41.430 --> 02:29:48.590 WLWV Board Room: but everybody has a different lived experience at school, and what we learned as we sat at different tables with different groups of students. 907 02:29:48.750 --> 02:29:53.819 WLWV Board Room: as they heard each other speak. it triggered memories about. 908 02:29:53.830 --> 02:30:02.439 WLWV Board Room: and mostly positive memories about teacher, engagement, or athletics, or whether it be 909 02:30:02.770 --> 02:30:12.479 WLWV Board Room: arts and and things of the sort. So it's it's interesting when you get that unfiltered information without someone there with a child. 910 02:30:12.770 --> 02:30:16.359 WLWV Board Room: you know, maybe talking about some things that 911 02:30:16.600 --> 02:30:28.069 WLWV Board Room: maybe their parents might give them a look and say, Hey, we don't talk about that outside of our home. right? We all. You all remember those books. So you kind of get that unfiltered information. And it's nice, because then we're able to. 912 02:30:28.180 --> 02:30:30.390 WLWV Board Room: Then, as board members 913 02:30:30.410 --> 02:30:40.149 WLWV Board Room: like, take that and really do something with it. So so, and we had groups. And then we had a board member sitting at each table, and I believe there was a district like 914 02:30:40.200 --> 02:30:52.270 WLWV Board Room: staff member. I can't remember if it was a teacher or or whatnot, but we had district employee, board member kids. And then we had list of questions. and they were open-ended. 915 02:30:52.290 --> 02:30:57.050 WLWV Board Room: And then it was kind of a group conversation, and then we would have 916 02:30:57.340 --> 02:31:03.690 WLWV Board Room: either a student or board member would present what the findings were around, you know. 917 02:31:04.550 --> 02:31:24.279 WLWV Board Room: Not always so good topic, you know, and then you kind of get their perspective of you know what their lived reality was. So it's it's a really nice kind of set up an environment. And it's really welcoming. And I think it was. It was by far the favorite thing that we've done since we've been board members over the last couple of years. So 918 02:31:24.470 --> 02:31:26.000 WLWV Board Room: it's a good experience 919 02:31:26.890 --> 02:31:51.549 WLWV Board Room: as a reminder director sloop is the board liaison to help us to work with us to put those 3 together. So she's gonna be pretty busy right now after she gets her site. Visits done. And she will be the key communicator around. This process, as well as maybe generating some questions. So I think, rather than 5 board members, you know. 920 02:31:51.840 --> 02:32:02.950 WLWV Board Room: contacting us. We will work with director sloop to hear what it is collectively that you're hoping to learn. and then she'll be facilitating those 3 events. 921 02:32:03.650 --> 02:32:09.090 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. In advance, director. Slip right? I'm listening about 20 unnecessary questions. 922 02:32:09.120 --> 02:32:11.359 WLWV Board Room: No, anything else. 923 02:32:12.420 --> 02:32:13.180 WLWV Board Room: No. 924 02:32:13.590 --> 02:32:22.670 WLWV Board Room: thank you for doing that very helpful. So we can get planning, and then what we'll do is we'll turn this around as quickly as possible for you, so that gives you and your team enough time to 925 02:32:22.950 --> 02:32:27.200 WLWV Board Room: to prepare, and we can prepare ourselves. So meeting adjourned.
